al-Tiryaq bi-Ahadith Qawwaha al-Albani wa Daafaha al-Huwayni Abu Ishaq (Arabic: الترياق بأحاديث قواها الألباني وضعفها الحويني أبو إسحاق, lit. 'The Antidote: Regarding Hadiths Strengthened by al-Albani and Weakened by Abu Ishaq al-Huwayni') is a contemporary hadith study compiled by Abu al-Mundhir Amr Abd al-Azim al-Huwayni . The work indexes hadiths that were authenticated or graded as good (hasan) by Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani, but were subsequently graded as weak (da‘if) or rejected (munkar) by his student Abu Ishaq al-Huwayni .
Composition and Purpose
The compiler initially collected a small number of hadiths over a seven-year period, based on oral questions and lectures by Abu Ishaq al-Huwayni . Approximately one year before completing the work, he expanded the scope to systematically examine all of al-Huwayni’s published books, typeset writings, and manuscripts, cross-referencing each rejected narration against al-Albani’s published evaluations .
The collection compiles 189 hadiths where the two scholars diverged in their rulings . The author framed the compilation not as a diminishment of al-Albani's scholarship, but as an illustration that hadith grading (tashih and tad‘if) is an exercise of scholarly judgment (ijtihad) where a student may legitimately differ with his teacher upon critical review .
Methodology and Structure
The book is structured as a concise reference index rather than an exhaustive critical apparatus . Because al-Huwayni’s analytical discussions often span many pages across numerous transmission paths for a single narration, the compiler restricted his entries to citing the respective judgments of both scholars along with exact volume and page references to their works :
- For the first 179 entries, citations are directly referenced to al-Huwayni's written works alongside al-Albani’s corresponding books .
- The final ten entries (nos. 180–189) consist of narrations that al-Huwayni evaluated orally during his lectures in response to student inquiries, which he had not documented in his published works .
- If a hadith is listed without naming the transmitting Companion, it signifies that al-Huwayni rejected the text (matn) entirely; if a Companion is named at the beginning, al-Huwayni's critique targets that specific chain of transmission while allowing that the text might be established through other routes .
The author deliberately refrained from weighing the conflicting rulings (tarjih) or adding earlier classical scholars' verdicts, leaving analytical preference to specialized researchers .
Publication and Reception
The book was published in its first edition in 1436 AH (2015 CE) by Maktabat Dar al-Hijaz in Riyadh . It includes introductory forewords by contemporary scholars Muhammad Id al-Abbasi, Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Shaybani, and Tariq Awad Allah Muhammad . The commentators praised the book's utility as an accessible index of divergent contemporary hadith evaluations while noting that a potential sequel could incorporate earlier authorities' verdicts and analytical assessments of the stronger position .
