al-Taliqat al-Sunniya ala al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya (The Sublime Commentaries on the Wasitiyya Creed) is a concise theological commentary by the Saudi scholar Faysal ibn Abd al-Aziz Al Mubarak (1313–1376 AH / 1895–1957 CE) on Ibn Taymiyya's (661–728 AH) creedal treatise al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya.
Background and Composition
The work is considered likely the earliest written commentary on al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya, composed prior to that of his contemporary Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Sa'di, whose commentary al-Taliqat al-munifa was written in 1372 AH. Evidence for its early composition includes Al Mubarak's later-life focus on legal works such as al-Marta al-mushbi (written before 1371 AH) and Majma al-jawad, as well as his incorporation of this commentary into his compendium Zubdat al-kalam fi al-usul wa-l-adab wa-l-ahkam, which comprised mainly his earlier writings.
Content and Method
The commentary provides concise explanations of the core theological tenets articulated in Ibn Taymiyya's base text according to the creed of Ahl al-Sunna wa-l-Jama'a. It addresses the six articles of faith—belief in God, His angels, His revealed scriptures, His messengers, resurrection after death, and the divine decree (qadar)—with particular focus on the divine names and attributes.
Al Mubarak elucidates the Quranic verses and prophetic traditions cited throughout the text, affirming divine attributes without distortion (tahrif), negation (tatil), adapting (takyif), or likening (tamthil). His explanations incorporate linguistic meanings and classical exegetical glosses, including transmissions from early authorities such as Ibn Abbas and the commentary of al-Baghawi.
Publication
The commentary was published in a single concise volume in 1426 AH (2005 CE) by Dar al-Sumay'i in Riyadh, edited and prepared for publication by Abd al-Ilah al-Shayi'.
