al-Ta‘liq ‘ala Tafsir al-Qurtubi (Commentary on the Exegesis of al-Qurtubi) is a transcribed series of lectures by the contemporary Saudi scholar Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr, delivering an analytical commentary on al-Qurtubi’s (d. 671 AH / 1273 CE) classical legal exegesis al-Jami‘ li-Ahkam al-Qur'an (The Compendium of Legal Rulings of the Qur'an) .
Background and Teaching History
The commentary originated as an ongoing teaching circle conducted by Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr, which spanned twenty-two years, beginning in 1411 AH (1990–1991 CE)—or in 1413 AH (1992–1993 CE) according to another statement by the author—and concluding in 1433 AH (2011–2012 CE) . The circle met twice weekly . Al-Khudayr subsequently commenced a second commentary cycle on the text on 8 Jumada al-Ula 1443 AH .
Initially, al-Khudayr declined to have the lessons formally recorded or advertised . However, following persistent requests from students, audio recordings commenced approximately around Surat Hud . Al-Khudayr also reflected on this long-term teaching engagement during a public session held by the Tafsir Center for Quranic Studies on 28 Safar 1435 AH, titled My Experience in Teaching the Exegesis of Imam al-Qurtubi over 22 Years .
Method and Structure
Al-Khudayr adopted a measured approach calibrated to the expansive nature of al-Qurtubi’s work . Noting that an exhaustive, line-by-line exposition would make completing such an encyclopedic work unfeasible, he restricted his remarks to what was necessary . His commentary focuses on:
- Harmonizing conflicting scholarly opinions cited in the text .
- Declaring weaker juristic or exegetical positions untenable .
- Providing legal, linguistic, and contextual rationales for particular interpretations .
The material was transcribed directly from the audio lessons published on al-Khudayr's official website .
