al-Tafsir al-Mamun ala Manhaj al-Tanzil wa al-Sahih al-Masnun (The Reliable Exegesis According to the Method of Revelation and Authentic Sunnah) is a contemporary eight-volume exegesis of the Quran authored by the Syrian scholar Mamun Hammoush (b. 1382 AH / 1962 CE). The work aims to provide a systematic, juristic, and comprehensive commentary grounded in the "two revelations"—the Quran and the authentic Prophetic Sunnah—in accordance with the understanding of the Companions and the Successors.

Background and Composition

Hammoush initiated the project during his academic specialization in the United States. He conceived the work in response to sectarian discord, partisan bias, and arbitrary scriptural interpretation, as well as the shortcomings he identified in classical and modern compilations, such as the inclusion of unverified transmissions, biblical lore (Isra'iliyyat), fabricated stories, weak hadiths, and speculative theology (kalam). Hammoush completed the writing in Damascus on 6 Rabi' al-Akhir 1427 AH (4 May 2006 CE).

Methodology and Sources

The author structured the work as an encyclopedic commentary centered on the two scriptural sources, drawing on major classical exegeses, hadith collections, legal manuals, works of legal statecraft (al-siyasah al-shar'iyyah), the Prophetic biography, and Arabic dictionaries. Methodologically, the work is characterized by several key principles:

  • Hadith Criticism and Grading: Rigorous filtering of traditions to exclude unauthentic reports, documenting the source of each narration from major compilations and explicitly noting its grade of authenticity.
  • Attribution of Interpretations: Direct attribution of exegetical opinions to their originators among the Companions, Successors, and leading scholars, followed by comparative analysis and reconciliation of conflicting views.
  • Contextualization and Legal Derivation: Linking verses to sound occasions of revelation (asbab al-nuzul), deriving jurisprudence and legal rulings, and addressing modern realities and contemporary developments.

Structure and Publication

The exegesis encompasses the entire text of the Quran in eight volumes. The first edition was published by the author in Damascus in 1428 AH (2007 CE), after undergoing linguistic review by Dr. Ahmad Ratib Hammoush.
