Mamun Hammoush (b. 1382 AH / 1962 CE) is a Syrian academic and Islamic scholar known for his writings on Quranic exegesis, prophetic biography, and Islamic theology.
Early Life and Education
Hammoush was born in Damascus, Syria, on Tuesday, 17 Muharram 1382 AH (19 June 1962 CE). In 1985, he completed undergraduate studies at the University of Damascus, earning a bachelor’s degree in science (mathematics and physics) with first-rank distinction, as well as a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
He subsequently pursued graduate studies in the United States, earning two master’s degrees from the University of Oklahoma: one in science focusing on systems of differential equations in 1988, and another in structural engineering specializing in doubly curved shells in 1989. In 1993, he completed two doctorates at the University of Arkansas: a state doctorate in science (mathematics and physics) researching dynamical systems, and a PhD in structural engineering focusing on elasticity theory, nonlinear analysis, and finite and boundary element methods. Alongside his scientific and engineering qualifications, he specialized in Islamic religious sciences, memorizing the Quran and studying the major works of authentic prophetic traditions and prophetic biography.
Scholarly Contribution
Hammoush's scholarship focuses on Quranic exegesis, prophetic biography, and early Islamic theology, emphasizing adherence to the Quran, authentic Sunnah, and the understanding of the Companions and Successors. His major exegetical work, al-Tafsīr al-Maʾmūn ʿalā Manhaj al-Tanzīl wa-al-Ṣaḥīḥ al-Masnūn (The Reliable Exegesis According to the Method of Revelation and Authentic Sunnah), presents a systematic, legal, and comprehensive contemporary commentary in eight volumes. In this exegesis, he focused on filtering the commentary to include only authentic prophetic traditions with source documentation, attributing interpretive statements directly to the early generations and scholars, and resolving conflicting views. He also authored al-Sīrah al-Nabawiyyah ʿalā Manhaj al-Waḥyayn (The Prophetic Biography According to the Method of the Two Revelations), a three-volume study applying a similar methodology to the life of the Prophet.
