Al-Rawd al-Bassam bi-Tartib wa Takhrij Fawaid Tammam (The Smiling Meadow in Arranging and Documenting the Hadith Benefits of Tammam) is a multi-volume Hadith work by the contemporary Kuwaiti scholar Abu Sulayman Jasim ibn Sulayman al-Fuhaid al-Dosari, dedicated to rearranging, annotating, and cross-referencing Fawaid al-Hadith by Tammam al-Razi (d. 414 AH / 1023 CE) .
Background and Purpose
The primary motivation for composing the work was the original structure of Tammam al-Razi's Fawaid al-Hadith, which, despite containing rare narrations and abundant hadith benefits, lacked topical organization and chapter headings . Because of this unstructured format, scholars rarely cited it directly, and narrations found within it were often attributed to later or less prominent sources . Al-Dosari undertook the project to reorganize and document the text to facilitate access for researchers and students of Hadith . He completed the drafting of the book on Thursday night, nineteen days into Sha'ban 1407 AH (with eleven nights remaining in the month) .
Structure and Methodology
The work opens with an introductory section divided into four chapters: a biography of Tammam al-Razi, an overview of the genre of fawaid literature in Hadith studies, a description of the manuscripts relied upon, and an explanation of the author's editorial methodology .
Al-Dosari transcribed the text using the Leiden manuscript as his primary source, collating it with other copies and noting textual variants . He also incorporated marginal notes written by al-Mundhiri found on the base manuscript, citing them explicitly after the relevant narrations .
In handling the Hadith material, al-Dosari adopted the following editorial methods:
- Topical Arrangement: Rearranging narrations according to traditional chapters of Islamic jurisprudence (abwab al-fiqh), adhering closely to the thematic ordering of the major six canonical Hadith collections .
- Takhrij and Verification: Providing chain documentation (takhrij) for each narration, detailing full (tammah) and partial (qasirah) corroborations (mutaba'at), followed by supporting narrations (shawahid) .
- Critical Evaluation: Analyzing the authenticity or weakness of chains, reviewing the statements of classical Hadith critics, and elaborating on disputed narrations .
- Indexing: Providing four comprehensive indices covering hadith openings (atraf al-hadith), non-prophetic reports (atraf al-athar), specific Hadith scrolls (nusakh) transmitted in Tammam's work, and an index of Companion chains (musanid al-sahabah), making the work navigable topically, alphabetically, and by narrator .
Publication and Critical Reception
The work was first published by Dar al-Basha'ir al-Islamiyyah in Beirut over several volumes between 1408 AH / 1987 CE and 1414 AH .
The publication prompted subsequent critical study; Muhammad Sabah Mansur authored a dedicated critique titled al-I'lam bi-Naqd Kitab al-Rawd al-Bassam (published by Mu'assasat Gheras in Kuwait, 1423 AH / 2003 CE), which compiled observations regarding Hadith rulings, cross-referencing, transmitter evaluations, and textual omissions across the book's sections .
