al-Radd al-Qawim ala al-Mujrim al-Athim (The Upright Refutation of the Sinful Criminal) is a two-volume polemical work by the Saudi scholar Hammud ibn Abdullah al-Tuwayjiri (d. 1413 AH / 1992 CE) dedicated to defending the Sunnah, the Companions of the Prophet, and the canonical status of Sahih al-Bukhari against modernist critiques .
Background and Purpose
Al-Tuwayjiri composed the work in response to a contemporary book titled al-Adwa' al-Qur'aniyya fi Iktisah al-Ahadith al-Isra'iliyya wa-Tathir al-Bukhari Minha (Quranic Lights in Sweeping Away Judaic Traditions and Cleansing al-Bukhari of Them), written by an author using the name al-Sayyid Salih Abu Bakr . In that work, Abu Bakr rejected 120 hadiths recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari as well as numerous other sound traditions, alleging that they were foreign biblical interpolations (isra'iliyyat) that contradicted the Quran . Abu Bakr drew heavily upon the modern rationalist critique of hadith, incorporating arguments from Mahmud Abu Rayya, Muhammad Abduh, Muhammad Rashid Rida, and the al-Manar school, particularly in challenging the reliability of the prolific narrator Abu Hurayra .
Content and Method
Al-Tuwayjiri wrote the book to dismantle Abu Bakr's arguments point by point across two volumes . He begins by contesting the author's pen name, citing hadiths that forbid conferring titles like sayyid (master) or salih (righteous) upon proponents of religious corruption and deviation .
In his substantive defense, al-Tuwayjiri addresses:
- Defense of the Companions and Successors: He upholds their integrity ('adala) and refutes allegations that they were negligent or gullible transmitters who absorbed foreign Jewish interpolations .
- The Science of Hadith Criticism: He explains that classical scholars of al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil (impugnment and accreditation) rigorously scrutinized transmitters and established specific works identifying fabricated reports (mawdu'at), rendering modern claims of unchecked infiltrations baseless .
- Affirmation of Prophetic Traditions and Miracles: He defends the authenticity of narrations detailing prophetic miracles (mu'jizat) and charismata (karamat) that Abu Bakr sought to explain away or reject .
- Critique of Modernist Hermeneutics: Al-Tuwayjiri argues that relying on unanchored modern opinions rather than scriptural evidence leads to misguidance and the unwarranted dismissal of authentic sunnah .
Publication History
