al-Qism al-Thani min al-Mujam al-Awsat lil-Tabarani (The Second Section of al-Mu'jam al-Awsat of al-Tabarani) is an academic critical edition and analytical study of a specific portion of the major hadith compendium al-Mujam al-Awsat by the hadith master Abu al-Qasim al-Tabarani (260–360 AH / 873–971 CE) . The work was prepared as a Master's thesis in hadith and its sciences at the Faculty of Usul al-Din at Al-Azhar University by Mahmoud Muhammad Muhammad Imarah al-Sa'dani, under the supervision of Ahmad Muhammad Muhammad Ali Salim and Ahmad Muhammad Sabri .

Scope and Contents

The edition covers hadiths 401 through 650 of al-Tabarani's al-Mu'jam al-Awsat . It opens with hadith 401, transmitted on the authority of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa', reporting that the Prophet ﷺ said: قَالَ اللَّهُ - (عز وجل) -: أَنَا عِنْدَ ظَنِّ عَبْدِي بِي ("Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: 'I am as My servant expects of Me...'") . The section concludes with hadith 650, transmitted on the authority of Abdullah ibn Abbas, regarding his overnight stay with his maternal aunt Maymunah bint al-Harith .

Subject and Methodology

Al-Tabarani arranged the original al-Mu'jam al-Awsat alphabetically according to the names of his teachers, compiling the rare (ghara'ib) and solitary (afrad) transmissions received from each of them . Al-Tabarani held the book in exceptionally high regard, stating: "This book is my soul" (هذا الكتاب روحي), on account of the immense labor he devoted to tracing its chains of transmission . Following nearly every narration, al-Tabarani appended comments identifying the points of singularity (tafarrud) in the chain .

The editor's study focuses on verifying the text against manuscript copies and evaluating al-Tabarani's judgments of solitary transmission across the edited section . This involves tracing parallel chains of transmission (mutaba'at and shawahid) to verify whether a given narrator was truly singular in reporting the text or chain, examining the biographical status of the narrators, and assessing the degree of authenticity of the reports .

Structure

The work is organized into an introduction and two primary divisions, followed by a conclusion and scholarly indexes :

  • Introductory Study (al-Qism al-Dirasi): Contains three chapters covering al-Tabarani's personal and scholarly life, an extensive introduction to al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and its manuscripts, and a theoretical examination of the science of solitary narrations (tafarrud) and anomalous reports (ghara'ib) in classical hadith methodology .
  • Critical Text Edition (al-Nass al-Muhaqqaq): Comprises the critically verified text of hadiths 401 to 650 with comprehensive takhrij (source attribution), analysis of isnads, and evaluation of al-Tabarani's explicit statements on narrator singularity .
