Scope and Content

The work encompasses hadiths 651 through 900 of al-Tabarani's al-Mu'jam al-Awsat . The text opens with hadith 651, a narration on the authority of 'Amr ibn al-Hamiq beginning: لَا يَحِقُّ الْعَبْدُ حَقِيقَةَ الْإِيمَانِ حَتَّى يَغْضَبَ لِلَّهِ، وَيَرْضَى لِلَّهِ ("A servant does not attain the reality of faith until he becomes angry for the sake of God and is pleased for the sake of God") . It concludes with hadith 900, narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri with the wording: مَنْ قَتْلَهُمْ فَلَهُ أَجْرُ شَهِيدٍ ("Whoever kills them shall have the reward of a martyr") .

The publication is structured into an introduction, two primary divisions, a conclusion, and scholarly indexes .

Structure and Methodology

The work is organized into two major parts:

  • The Introductory Study (al-Qism al-Dirasi): Divided into three thematic chapters :

    • Chapter One: A biography of al-Tabarani, covering his name, lineage, birth, upbringing, death, travels, teachers, students, scholarly standing, and writings .
    • Chapter Two: A monograph on al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, detailing its title, attribution, subject, the author's methodology in this section, scholarly contributions toward the text, the technical definition of a mu'jam among hadith scholars, a comparison among al-Tabarani's three dictionaries (al-Mujam al-Kabir, al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and al-Mujam al-Saghir), and a description of its manuscript and printed copies .
    • Chapter Three: A theoretical examination of single-narrator exclusivity (tafarrud) and rare transmissions (ghara'ib), outlining their linguistic and technical definitions, classifications, rulings, causes of narrational singularity, scholarly stances toward anomalous reports, and existing literature on isolated and rare narrations .
  • The Edited Text (al-Nass al-Muhaqqaq): Comprises the critical edition of the 250 hadiths, featuring textual verification, source attribution (takhrij), evaluation of chains of transmission (isnads) for authenticity or weakness, and critical evaluation of al-Tabarani's individual rulings regarding narrational exclusivity and rarity .
