al-Nukat al-Jiyad al-Muntakhaba min Kalam Shaykh al-Nuqqad (Arabic: النكت الجياد المنتخبة من كلام شيخ النقاد, lit. 'The Excellent Points Selected from the Discourse of the Master of Critics'), fully titled Mawsu'at al-Mu'allimi al-Yamani wa-Atharuhu fi 'Ilm al-Hadith al-Musammat al-Nukat al-Jiyad al-Muntakhaba min Kalam Shaykh al-Nuqqad, is a specialized encyclopedic work on hadith criticism compiled by the Saudi scholar Abu Anas Ibrahim ibn Said al-Subayhi . The book collects, organizes, and analyzes the critical methodology, theoretical principles, and biographical evaluations of narrators articulated across the writings of the Yemeni hadith scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Mu'allimi .
Background and Purpose
The compiler prepared the work to document and highlight al-Mu'allimi's critical approach to hadith methodology, narrator evaluation (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil), and hidden defects ('ilal) . Al-Subayhi extracted al-Mu'allimi's scattered remarks and scholarly contributions from his major treatises, such as al-Tankil and al-Anwar al-kashifa, as well as his critical annotations on classical works like al-Shawkani's al-Fawa'id al-majmu'a . The collection was designed to present al-Mu'allimi's inductive method and his application of classical principles of criticism in distinction from later theoretical formulations .
Structure and Content
The work was published in four volumes and is organized into three primary divisions alongside introductory studies and concluding appendices :
- Part One (Biographies of Narrators): Covers the individual hadith narrators upon whom al-Mu'allimi passed critical judgments of praise or disparagement (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil) . This part is preceded by an overview of the compiler's methodology, a biographical account and bibliography of al-Mu'allimi, and an introductory treatise titled Ta'zim Qadr A'immat al-Naqd ("Venerating the Stature of the Masters of Criticism") . It includes appended critical benefits and analytical notes compiled by al-Subayhi .
- Part Two (Methodologies of Early Critics and Authors): Examines the approaches and criteria employed by seminal hadith compilers and critics, including al-Bukhari, regarding narrator selection, isnad evaluation, and thematic arrangement, as deduced by al-Mu'allimi .
- Part Three (Theoretical and Inductive Principles): Explores the theoretical and inductive rules that formed the basis of al-Mu'allimi's critical method in assessing narrations and transmitters .
The final volume includes two supplementary appendices:
- Al-Muntaqa min Akhbar Tanawalaha al-Mu'allimi bi-l-Naqd, containing a selection of individual narrations and historical reports analyzed and critiqued by al-Mu'allimi .
- Manhaj wa-Khutuwat Tashih al-Kutub 'ala Usuliha al-Khattiyya, detailing al-Mu'allimi's methodology and practical steps for the critical editing and collation of classical texts from original manuscripts .
