al-Najm al-Mudi bi Dhikr Riwayat wa Alfaz Hadith al-Musi (The Luminous Star in Mentioning the Narrations and Wordings of the Hadith of the Man Who Prayed Badly) is a specialized hadith study by Ghazi bin Salim Aflah that compiles and analyzes the transmission paths and textual variants of the foundational hadith on the manner of prayer known as hadith al-musi' salatahu .
Background and Composition
The work originated as an academic research paper prepared in 1414 AH and completed during Aflah's third-year studies at the College of Hadith and Islamic Studies at the Islamic University of Madinah in 1422 AH (2001–2002 CE), where it was approved with distinction under the supervision of Professor Dr. 'Abdullah ibn 'Atiq al-Mutarrifi . The text was reviewed prior to publication by 'Abdullah al-Mutarrifi, Dr. 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salih al-Shamrani, and Dr. Sadiq ibn Muhammad al-Baydani .
Aflah subsequently prepared a condensed version entitled al-Kawkab al-Mudi bi Takhrij Hadith al-Musi, which was printed in 1424 AH (2003–2004 CE) through the efforts of Dr. Sadiq al-Baydani . Following requests from scholars and students to release the unabridged study, the author revised the original manuscript and published it in a first edition in 1442 AH / 2021 CE .
Subject and Methodology
The work focuses on the narrative of the Companion who performed his prayer improperly in the Prophet's ﷺ presence and was instructed repeatedly to repeat it before the Prophet ﷺ taught him the required pillars of prayer . Aflah aimed to gather all extant transmission routes from printed hadith collections, document every variant phrase, and verify the authenticity of additional wordings (zawa'id) that do not appear in Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim .
In his methodology, the author evaluates each chain of transmission independently, identifies the central narrators (madar al-isnad), synthesizes the variant wordings into a combined narrative, and provides concise biographical entries for less famous narrators .
Structure
The book is structured into an introduction, a preamble, three main parts, and a conclusion:
- Preamble (al-Tamhid): Summarizes the narrative of the hadith and presents the statements of classical scholars and jurists—such as al-Nawawi, Ibn Daqiq al-Id, and Ibn Taymiyyah—regarding its legal significance as a foundational text defining the obligatory acts and essential pillars of prayer .
- Part One (al-Bab al-Awwal): Examines the hadith through the narration of Abu Hurayrah across three chapters covering its takhrij, textual variants transmitted through 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Umar and 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar al-'Umari, and a combined presentation of its full wording .
- Part Two (al-Bab al-Thani): Analyzes the transmission through the Companion Rifa'ah ibn Rafi', tracing the differences in its isnad and documenting its specific phrasing and additions .
- Part Three (al-Bab al-Thalith): Presents the legal commentary and derived benefits from Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's Fath al-Bari, accompanied by annotations from the author .
- Conclusion (al-Khatimah): Summarizes the findings and is followed by indices of Quranic verses, hadiths, biographical names, subjects, and cited sources .
