al-Musnad al-Mawdui al-Jami lil-Kutub al-Ashara

al-Musnad al-Mawdui al-Jami lil-Kutub al-Ashara (The Comprehensive Thematic Musnad of the Ten Books) is a contemporary hadith reference work by Suhayb Abd al-Jabbar, completed in March 2013 . It serves as an exhaustive index and cross-referencing source (takhrij) for the chains and variant paths of hadiths collected in the author's companion compilation, al-Jami al-Sahih lil-Sunan wa-al-Masanid .

Purpose and Scope

The author compiled the work after observing that existing reference books and digital databases either listed hadith numbers without text, omitted authenticity grades, excluded corroborating reports (shawahid), or made copying and synthesizing multiple chains cumbersome for researchers . The work gathers all transmissions, variants, and corroborating narrations for each hadith text across ten major classical hadith collections :

  1. Sahih al-Bukhari
  2. Sahih Muslim
  3. Jami al-Tirmidhi
  4. Sunan al-Nasa'i
  5. Sunan Abi Dawud
  6. Sunan Ibn Majah
  7. Musnad Ahmad
  8. Muwatta Malik
  9. Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah
  10. Sahih Ibn Hibban

The compilation incorporates sound (sahih), weak (da'if), and suspended (mu'allaq) reports from these ten collections without omitting their texts . In addition to hadiths, it systematically organizes the scattered explanations of rare Quranic vocabulary (gharib al-Qur'an) and chapter comments found throughout Sahih al-Bukhari, arranging them by individual surah .

Method and Structure

The book is arranged thematically into four broad sections: creed (aqidah), the Quran and its sciences, jurisprudence (fiqh) and its branches, and prophetic biography and virtues (al-siyar wa-al-manaqib) . Within each chapter, the presentation follows a structured hierarchy:

  • Arrangement of reports: Prophetic narrations (marfu') are cited first, followed by statements of the Companions (mawquf) and Successors (maqtu') . Authenticated transmissions are placed at the beginning of each entry, followed by sound corroborating paths, while weak paths and conflicting weak narrations are placed at the bottom .
  • Takhrij and shawahid: Under each main hadith text, variants narrated through the same Companion are grouped under the takhrij portion in a fixed order of sources (al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Malik ibn Anas, Ibn Khuzaymah, and Ibn Hibban), followed by narrations on the same subject transmitted through other Companions as corroborating evidence (shawahid) .
  • Multi-topic hadiths: For compound narrations that encompass several independent legal rulings or subjects, the author places a plus sign (+) within the text to indicate that the preceding clause is fully documented under its respective topical chapter .
  • Hadith grading: The author includes the authenticity rulings of al-Albani for the Four Sunan, Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, and Sahih Ibn Hibban . For Musnad Ahmad, he tracks all weak reports and provides the evaluations of Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut; any report from the Musnad cited without an explicit grade is treated by the compiler as not dropping below the level of hasan li-ghayrihi . Reports from the Sahihayn are included without added grading, as is Muwatta Malik .
