al-Muntaqa min Samaat Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahim al-Maqdisi (Selected Auditions of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahim al-Maqdisi) is a hadith compilation containing selected narrations from the transmitted auditions (samaʿat) of the Hanbali scholar and traditionist Ibn al-Kamal al-Hanbali (d. 688 AH / 1289 CE) .
Background and Author
The transmissions recorded in the work belong to Shams al-Din Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahim ibn Abd al-Wahid al-Maqdisi al-Salihi al-Hanbali, commonly known as Ibn al-Kamal (born 607 AH / 1211 CE; died 688 AH / 1289 CE) . A cousin of Fakhr al-Din Ibn al-Bukhari, he studied closely under his uncle Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi and narrated extensively from leading contemporary scholars, transmitting hadith for roughly forty years .
Structure and Contents
The work consists of numbered parts (ajzaʾ) extracted from the collections and texts that Ibn al-Kamal heard directly from his masters . The surviving fascicles—such as the twenty-eighth part—open with narrations transmitted on the authority of prominent Damascus traditionists, including Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi and Muwaffaq al-Din Ibn Qudamah .
The selected texts encompass Prophetic traditions on diverse subjects, including:
- Eschatological descriptions of Paradise and divine reward .
- Supererogatory devotions, such as the witr prayer, the mid-morning prayer (duha), and voluntary fasting .
- The virtues, recitation, and memorization of the Quran .
- Islamic etiquette, charitable conduct, and invoking blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ on Fridays .
- Legal rulings and admonitions, such as the obligation of ritual prayer and seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave .
Manuscript Preservation
Multiple parts of the text are preserved within the Majamiʿ ʿUmariyya collections housed at the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus, including part 9 (within Majmuʿ 110, fols. 14–42), part 28 (Majmuʿ 92, fols. 320–327), and part 40 (Majmuʿ 101, fols. 84–91) .
