Ibn al-Kamal al-Hanbali (607–688 AH / 1211–1289 CE) was a Syrian Hanbali hadith scholar and traditionist based in the Salihiyya quarter of Damascus . He is noted for completing the hadith collection al-Ahkam begun by his uncle Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi and for his transmitted auditions preserved in al-Muntaqa min Sama'at Ibn al-Kamal al-Hanbali .
Lineage and Education
His full name was Shams al-Din Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn al-Kamal Abd al-Rahim ibn Abd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Maqdisi al-Salihi al-Hanbali . He was born into a prominent scholarly family from the Banu Qudama circle in Dhu al-Hijjah 607 AH, and was a cousin of the traditionist Fakhr al-Din Ibn al-Bukhari .
As a child, he was brought to attend the hadith sessions of Taj al-Din al-Kindi and Ibn al-Harastani . He subsequently heard hadith from a number of authorities, including Ibn Qudamah (al-Muwaffaq), al-Imad al-Maqdisi, Da'ud ibn Mula'ib, Abu al-Futuh al-Bakri, al-Shams al-Attar, Musa ibn Abd al-Qadir, and Ibn Abi Luqma . He also held an authorization (ijaza) from al-Mu'ayyad ibn Muhammad al-Tusi to transmit the Muwatta' in the recension of Abu Mus'ab . His primary scholarly training took place under his paternal uncle, the hadith master Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi, whom he accompanied closely and from whom he transmitted copiously, eventually completing the compilation of his uncle's legal hadith work al-Ahkam .
Scholarly Standing and Teaching
Ibn al-Kamal was characterized by al-Dhahabi as a pious, righteous, and upright scholar and an extensive "vessel of transmission" (aw'iyat al-riwaya) with moderate analytical discernment . He remained active in transmitting hadith for approximately forty years .
Numerous scholars heard hadith from him, among them Ibn Taymiyya, who attended his readings in 681 AH . His scholarly household also engaged in transmission: his son Muwaffaq al-Din Abu Bakr Ahmad (d. 693 AH) was trained heavily in hadith by him and served as an instructor and librarian at the Diya'iyya madrasa, while his daughter Asma' bint Muhammad (d. 723 AH) became a recognized transmitter .
