al-Muntaqā min Farāʾid al-Fawāʾid (The Selection from Unique Benefits) is a collection of scholarly notes and curated legal, theological, and miscellaneous points compiled by the Saudi scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE) .
Background and Purpose
The book originated from a notebook in which al-Uthaymin recorded important scholarly points and questions as he encountered them in his reading, in order to preserve them and avoid forgetting them, titling that initial collection Farāʾid al-Fawāʾid . He subsequently selected from that notebook what he deemed the most beneficial and important points, titling this selection al-Muntaqā min Farāʾid al-Fawāʾid . In his preface, he expressed the hope that it would benefit readers and serve as an example for students of Islamic knowledge to follow in recording and curating beneficial insights .
Contents and Structure
The work is organized into distinct entries labeled as benefits (fawāʾid), drawing heavily from foundational classical treatises:
- Theology and Creed (ʿAqīdah): The opening part begins with theological selections, drawing notably from the works of Ibn Taymiyyah, such as Kitāb al-Īmān (Book of Faith), covering definitions of Islam and iman, sects such as the Murji'ah and Mu'tazilah, and related doctrinal distinctions . It also includes excerpts and discussions from Ibn Taymiyyah's Sharḥ ʿAqīdat al-Aṣfahānī concerning the divine names and attributes, arguments on prophecy, and theological controversies .
- Jurisprudence, Ethics, and Miscellaneous Topics: The text compiles legal questions, etiquette from works such as al-Ādāb al-Sharʿiyyah, discussions on endowments (waqf), and literary and grammatical notes, concluding with an analysis of poetic and familial riddles .
The text has been published both independently and within the seventh volume of the author's collected works, Majmūʿ Fatāwā wa-Rasāʾil al-ʿUthaymīn .
