al-Mukhtasar al-Nasih fi Tahdhib al-Kitab al-Jami al-Sahih (The Sincere Abridgment in the Refinement of the Comprehensive Authentic Collection) is a work of hadith abridgment and commentary by the Andalusian Maliki jurist and hadith scholar al-Muhallab ibn Abi Sufra (d. 435 AH / 1043 CE) . The book abridges and refines Sahih al-Bukhari by eliminating repetitive passages, consolidating chains of transmission, and appending concise legal and critical remarks .
Title and Purpose
The title appears in early sources in slightly varying phrasings; while commonly known as al-Mukhtasar al-Nasih fi Tahdhib al-Kitab al-Jami al-Sahih, the author's student Ibn Sahl referred to it as Kitab al-Nasih fi Ikhtisar al-Sahih . Al-Muhallab based his work on his narrations of Sahih al-Bukhari transmitted through scholars such as al-Asili and al-Qabisi . In his introduction, al-Muhallab stated that the work was intended to serve three categories of scholars: hadith transmitters (al-musnidun), jurists (al-mutafaqqihun), and memorizers (al-mutahaffizun) .
Methodology and Structure
Al-Muhallab organized the work by gathering dispersed narrations and compiling their routes (turuq) together without compromising their textual wording or chains of transmission, thereby avoiding the lengthy repetitions and fragmentation present in the original arrangement of al-Bukhari . At the same time, he retained al-Bukhari's topical chapter headings (tarajim) and legal deductions (istinbatat) .
Beyond abridgment, al-Muhallab appended analytical commentary:
- He addressed difficult or ambiguous traditions (al-ahadith al-mushkila) to resolve apparent contradictions .
- He scrutinized narrator oversights (al-wahm) and evaluated hidden defects (‘ilal), as well as narrators' reliability (al-jarh wa-l-ta‘dil) .
- He explained the jurisprudential rulings derived from the texts .
Al-Muhallab later composed a broader commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, much of which was incorporated by his student Ibn Battal into his own commentary .
Reception and Publication
The work was praised by later scholars; Ibn Farhun commended al-Muhallab's abridgment and its fine marginal commentary . The book has been edited by Ahmad ibn Faris al-Sallum and published by Dar al-Tawhid and Dar Ahl al-Sunnah in Riyadh (1430 AH / 2009 CE) .
