Abu al-Qasim al-Muhallab ibn Abi Sufra (d. 435 AH / 1044 CE) was an Andalusian Maliki jurist, hadith scholar, and judge from Almería, best known for his abridgment and commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Mukhtasar al-Nasih fi Tahdhib al-Kitab al-Jami al-Sahih.
Lineage and career
His full name is Abu al-Qasim al-Muhallab ibn Ahmad ibn Abi Sufra Usayd (also recorded as Asid or Ibn Abi Sufra ibn Usayd) ibn Ubayd Allah (or Abd Allah) al-Tamimi al-Asadi. He was associated with the city of Almería, where he served as a judge (qadi); according to another account, he held the judgeship of Málaga.
Education, teachers, and students
In Córdoba, al-Muhallab studied under Abu Muhammad al-Asili, becoming one of his closest students, learning jurisprudence alongside him, and marrying his daughter. He also studied in al-Andalus with Abu Zakariyya al-Ash'ari and Abd al-Warith ibn Khayrun. He then traveled eastward, studying in Kairouan and Egypt under scholars including Abu al-Hasan al-Qabisi, Abu Dharr al-Harawi, Ali ibn Bundar al-Qazwini, and Ali ibn Fihr.
Among those who transmitted from him were Abu Umar ibn al-Hadhdha', Hatim ibn Muhammad al-Tarabulsi, Abu Abd Allah ibn Abid, al-Qadi Ibn al-Murabit, and Abu al-Abbas al-Dala'i.
Scholarly standing
Al-Muhallab was regarded as a prominent authority in jurisprudence, hadith criticism, legal reasoning, and rhetoric. His student Abu Umar ibn al-Hadhdha' described him as the sharpest in mind, the most articulate, and the deepest in understanding among those he had met. The judge Abu al-Asbagh ibn Sahl remarked that through al-Muhallab, the compilation of al-Bukhari was revived in al-Andalus, as it was studied and read under him with deep jurisprudential inquiry throughout his life.
Death
According to a contemporary record, al-Muhallab died at midday on Monday, 13 Shawwal 435 AH (May 1044 CE), and was buried the following Tuesday after the afternoon prayer. Ibn Mudir reported his death in the year 436 AH.
