al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir (vols. 13–14) constitutes the recovered thirteenth and fourteenth volume sections of the major hadith compendium al-Mu'jam al-Kabir by the hadith master al-Tabarani (260–360 AH / 873–971 CE) . It contains the narrations (masanid) of Companions named Abdullah (the ‘Abadilah and others bearing the name) .
Background and Editing
When al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir was first edited by Hamdi ibn Abd al-Majid al-Salafi and printed in twenty-five volumes, several parts were absent due to the lack of available manuscript copies, specifically volumes 13, 14, 15, 16, and 21 . Later, fragments of volume 13 were discovered and published independently, first by Hamdi al-Salafi and by Tariq ibn Iwadullah .
A unified critical edition of volumes 13 and 14 was subsequently published in 1429 AH (2008 CE), prepared by a team of researchers under the supervision of Sa'd ibn Abd Allah al-Humayd and Khalid ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Juraysi . This edition comprises 1,406 hadiths, extending the sequential numbering from hadith 13,655 to 14,817 and beyond, thereby supplying 931 additional hadiths over earlier partial printings .

Manuscript Basis
The edition of these two volumes relies on three main manuscript sources:
- A manuscript purchased from Hamdi al-Salafi, which spans from folio 284a to the end of the codex (hadiths 13,655 to 14,584) . Its cover title was damaged and overlaid with a mistaken label reading al-Mukhtasar min al-Sahihayn, but preserves a chain of transmission from Abu Mansur Mahmud ibn Isma'il al-Sayrafi al-Ashqar from Abu al-Husayn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Fadhshah from al-Tabarani, concluding with an audition certificate recorded by Yusuf ibn Khalil al-Dimashqi in Aleppo dated 638 AH .
- A manuscript preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris (no. 2011), beginning at hadith 14,585 with the remainder of the musnad of Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, transcribed in 337 folios by Abu Bakr ibn Ali al-Ansari al-Bahnasi al-Shafi'i in Muharram 728 AH .
- A fragment held at the Al-Zahiriyah Library in Damascus (within composite codex no. 89, folios 204–234), containing the continuation of the musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr and other Companions named Abdullah, bearing a note of audition by al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Khusraw al-Balkhi .
