al-Masbuk ala Minhat al-Suluk fi Sharh Tuhfat al-Muluk (Arabic: المسبوك على منحة السلوك في شرح تحفة الملوك) is an extensive contemporary legal supercommentary (hashiyah) and critical edition authored by Abd al-Muhsin al-Qasim, imam and preacher at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina .
Background and Purpose
The work serves as an exhaustive annotation and critical edition of Minhat al-Suluk fi Sharh Tuhfat al-Muluk, a commentary composed by Badr al-Din al-Ayni (d. 855 AH) on Tuhfat al-Muluk, a foundational primer on Hanafi jurisprudence authored by Zayn al-Din Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Razi . Al-Qasim prepared his marginalia to elucidate difficult phrasing, clarify complex legal points, and broaden the comparative scope of al-Ayni’s commentary .
Methodology and Structure
In his supercommentary, al-Qasim supplements the legal discussions by documenting the positions of all four Sunni schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali) wherever al-Ayni omitted comparative rulings . He also undertook the verification and source attribution (takhrij) of more than six hundred hadiths and ancestral traditions (athar) cited by al-Ayni, noting their authenticity levels unless they appeared in Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim, where he considered their inclusion in the two canonical collections sufficient proof of soundness .
The book is organized into traditional jurisprudential divisions across four volumes:
- Volume 1: Purification (Kitab al-Taharah) .
- Volume 2: Prayer (Kitab al-Salah) .
- Volume 3: Almsgiving (Kitab al-Zakah), Fasting (Kitab al-Sawm), Pilgrimage (Kitab al-Hajj), and Jihad (Kitab al-Jihad) .
- Volume 4: Hunting and Slaughter (Kitab al-Sayd wa-al-Dhaba'ih), Disapproved Matters (Kitab al-Karahiyah), Inheritance Shares (Kitab al-Fara'id), and Earning and Conduct (Kitab al-Kasb wa-al-Adab) .
Manuscripts and Publication
To establish the text, al-Qasim consulted four manuscript copies of al-Razi's base text (Tuhfat al-Muluk) and seven manuscript copies of al-Ayni's commentary (Minhat al-Suluk) . The work was published in four volumes in Riyadh in 1428 AH / 2007 CE .
