al-Manahi al-Lafziya (Verbal Prohibitions) is a treatise by the Saudi Islamic scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE) that examines improper, disliked, and prohibited words and idioms commonly used in everyday speech .

Origin and Compilation

The material comprising the work originated from the teaching lessons, legal verdicts, and rulings of Ibn Uthaymin . It was gathered and organized by some of his students in 1415 AH . Many of the author's legal rulings and discussions on such verbal prohibitions also appeared across other compilations of his works, including al-Majmu al-Thamin min Fatawa Ibn Uthaymin .

Structure and Content

The work is arranged in a question-and-answer format, addressing the legal status of common expressions used by the general public . Ibn Uthaymin evaluates colloquial phrases, conventional greetings, supplications, and formulas against Islamic legal and creedal standards .

Among the topics covered are:

  • Everyday salutations and requests (such as saying "arjuk" or "tahiyyati"), explaining that general greetings between people are permissible, while ultimate and absolute greeting belongs solely to God .
  • Ritual-related phrases, such as the ruling on uttering formulas like "aqamaha Allahu wa-adamaha" upon hearing the call to commence prayer (iqama) .
  • Disliked and prohibited naming conventions, including the avoidance of names that carry theological or religious problematic implications .

The book is classified among contemporary monographs dedicated to verbal mistakes and prohibited speech, alongside works such as Mu'jam al-Manahi al-Lafziyya by Bakr Abu Zayd .
