al-Lubab: Sharh Fusul al-Adab (Arabic: اللباب «شرح فصول الآداب») is a contemporary commentary on Islamic manners and etiquette by Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Mani al-Ruqi, explaining the classical treatise Fusul al-Adab by the Hanbali scholar Abu al-Wafa Ibn Aqil (d. 513 AH / 1119 CE) .
Origin and Composition
The base text, Fusul al-Adab wa-Makarim al-Akhlaq al-Mashru‘ah, is a concise Hanbali treatise summarizing lawful manners and moral conduct with textual evidence . Noting that Ibn Aqil's concise manual had not received adequate scholarly attention, al-Ruqi delivered a comprehensive explanation across multiple teaching gatherings .
Students transcribed the audio recordings of these lessons, documented and referenced the hadiths mentioned, and presented the compiled draft to al-Ruqi, who revised the text, corrected errors, and added further material for publication . The book includes an introductory note signed by Fahd ibn al-Humaydi al-Barraq .
Method and Scope
In his commentary, al-Ruqi examines the linguistic and legal meanings of key terms before delving into specific rulings . For each topic, he presents earlier scholarly viewpoints, analyzes legal proofs, engages with potential objections, and evaluates hadiths and their chains of transmission .
The work covers numerous facets of Islamic social conduct and daily ethics, including:
- Salutations and physical greetings: Rulings on handshakes (musafahah), embracing, kissing hands or heads out of respect for religious learning or age, and standing up for righteous figures and parents .
- Mosque etiquette: Guidelines concerning bodily cleanliness and the disapproval of performing disruptive personal grooming or excessive trade inside mosques .
- Duties toward parents: The obligation of filial piety (birr al-walidayn) and the limits of obedience regarding disobedience to God .
- Gatherings and everyday habits: Recommended supplications upon concluding gatherings (kaffarat al-majlis) and physical postures to avoid .
Abridgment and Publication
The commentary was published by Dar al-Tadmuriyyah . An abridged version of the work was also issued under the title Lubb al-Lubab: Mukhtasar Sharh Fusul al-Adab .
