al-La'ali' al-Makkiyya min Kalam Khayr al-Bariyya (The Meccan Pearls from the Speech of the Best of Creation) is a contemporary hadith commentary by Muhammad ibn Salih al-Shawi (b. 1350 AH / 1932 CE), expounding seventy authentic prophetic traditions.

Origin and Composition

The book originated from notes al-Shawi recorded after moving to Mecca and residing near the Sacred Mosque, where he regularly attended study circles. Focus was placed primarily on comprehensive hadiths (al-ahadith al-jami'ah) highlighting Islamic teachings, paired with brief explanations compiled from hadith commentaries and lectures delivered by scholars at the sanctuary.

When his son, Salih al-Shawi, suggested publishing the material, al-Shawi initially declined because the collection was unorganized and mixed authentic and weak narrations. Following his son's insistence, he agreed to prepare it on the condition that the material be reorganized, expanded with full commentary, restricted exclusively to authentic narrations, and provided with source documentation (takhrij). The author concluded the work on 23 Muharram 1442 AH (31 August 2021 CE).

Structure and Method

The collection consists of seventy authentic prophetic hadiths, opening with a narration on reaching old age ("Allah has left no excuse for a servant whose life He extended to sixty or seventy years") and concluding with the virtues of the statement la hawla wa-la quwwata illa billah as a treasure of Paradise.

For each entry, al-Shawi follows a consistent four-step framework:

  1. Presenting the complete Arabic text of the hadith with full vocalization.
  2. Defining and clarifying obscure vocabulary words.
  3. Providing an explanatory commentary discussing the legal, theological, and practical rulings of the text along with notable scholarly interpretations.
  4. Concluding with an itemized summary of key lessons and derived benefits in concise points.
