Muhammad bin Salih al-Shawi (b. 1350 AH / 1932 CE) is a Saudi scholar from al-Bukayriyyah, known for his treatises on legal maxims and prophetic traditions, including al-Tuhfa al-Makkiyya fi Tawdih Ahamm al-Qawaid al-Fiqhiyya and al-Laali al-Makkiyya min Kalam Khayr al-Bariyya.
Early life and education
Muhammad ibn Salih ibn Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Sulayman ibn Muhammad ibn Ghanim al-Shawi al-Baqmi al-Azdi was born in al-Bukayriyyah on 23 Ramadan 1350 AH (31 January 1932 CE). He was raised in a religious and affluent household; his father, Salih ibn Abd Allah al-Shawi, was a scholar and merchant of al-Bukayriyyah who declined two judicial appointments—one in al-Qasim offered by King Abd al-Aziz and another in southern Arabia offered by King Sa'ud—in order to focus on commercial trade, acquiring knowledge, and teaching.
Al-Shawi began memorizing the Quran in his early childhood under Sheikh Abdullah al-Khulaifi, prior to the latter's appointment as imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca. He completed his memorization under the Quranic reciter Abd al-Rahman ibn Salim al-Kuraydis at the Turki Mosque in al-Bukayriyyah.
Career and scholarship
In the earlier part of his life, al-Shawi was primarily engaged in government administrative posts, preaching, and other duties. Following his retirement, he entered private enterprise and commerce alongside his religious devotions.
Throughout his life, he authored research treatises on legal theory, jurisprudence, and hadith, which were subsequently assembled and edited by his son Salih al-Shawi, including his work on legal maxims, al-Tuhfa al-Makkiyya, and his commentary on prophetic traditions, al-La'ali' al-Makkiyya.
