al-Hidaya fi Takhrij Ahadith al-Bidaya (The Guidance in the Hadith Verification of the Bidaya) is a hadith verification (takhrij) work by the Moroccan hadith scholar Ahmad ibn al-Siddiq al-Ghumari (1320–1380 AH / 1902–1960 CE), dedicated to referencing and assessing the prophetic traditions cited in Bidayat al-Mujtahid wa-Nihayat al-Muqtasid by the Maliki jurist Ibn Rushd al-Hafid (520–595 AH / 1126–1198 CE) .

Composition and Purpose

Al-Ghumari composed the book in response to requests from students and seekers of knowledge who sought a concise extraction of the hadiths in Ibn Rushd’s comparative legal treatise . The author completed copying the first volume of his autograph manuscript on Friday afternoon, 16 Rajab 1375 AH (1956 CE), though he did not record a completion date at the end of the second volume .

Scope and Methodology

The work encompasses the verification of 1,799 hadiths and reports . In his introduction, al-Ghumari outlines key aspects of his approach:

  • Restriction to Marfu‘ Narrations: Al-Ghumari restricted his takhrij exclusively to prophetic traditions (marfu‘), explicitly omitting non-prophetic Companion reports and opinions (mawquf / athar), explaining that he did not consider mawquf reports to constitute binding legal proofs .
  • Hadith Sourcing and Analysis: When sourcing a narration, he references it first to the Six Books (al-Kutub al-Sitta) whenever available, but also traces it across other hadith compendia, citing variant paths of transmission (turuq), chains of narrators (asand), and textual variations (riwayat) .

Manuscripts and Publication

The original manuscript of the work was written in al-Ghumari’s own Maghrebi Kufic hand and was preserved among the possessions of his brother, Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Ghumari . The first manuscript volume, comprising 490 medium-format pages, contained the chapters on purification (Taharah) and prayer (Salah) .

al-Hidaya fi Takhrij Ahadith al-Bidaya was published in an eight-volume edition by Alam al-Kutub in Beirut in 1407 AH / 1987 CE, printed alongside the text of Bidayat al-Mujtahid across the top of each page . The edition was edited by a team of researchers: Volumes 1 and 2 by Yusuf Abd al-Rahman al-Mar‘ashli and Adnan Ali Shallaq; Volumes 3, 4, and 8 by Adnan Ali Shallaq; Volume 5 by Ali Nayif Biqa‘i; Volume 6 by Ali Hasan al-Tawil; and Volume 7 by Muhammad Salim Ibrahim Samarah .
