Ahmad ibn al-Siddiq al-Ghumari (1320–1380 AH / 1902–1960 CE) was a Moroccan hadith scholar, jurist, and Sufi based between Tangier and Cairo, best known for his critical hadith compilation al-Mudawi li-Ilal al-Jami al-Saghir wa-Sharhay al-Manawi ("The Remedy for the Defects of al-Jami al-Saghir and al-Munawi's Two Commentaries") .

Lineage and early life

He was Shihab al-Din Abu al-Fayd Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Siddiq ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Qasim ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Mu'min al-Hasani al-Idrisi al-Ghumari al-Tanji al-Azhari . His paternal lineage traced back through Idris I to al-Hasan ibn Ali, while his maternal lineage also traced to Idris I through his mother's grandfather, the Sufi commentator Ahmad ibn Ajiba (d. 1224 AH) . His early ancestors migrated from al-Andalus in the late fifth century AH to the outskirts of Tlemcen before settling across northern Morocco, including Ghomara and Tangier .

He was born in the territory of the Bani Sa'id tribe near Tetouan on Friday, 27 Ramadan 1320 AH (December 1902 CE) . Two months after his birth, his father, Muhammad ibn al-Siddiq, brought him to Tangier, where he was raised . At the age of five, he began studying the Quran under al-Arabi ibn Ahmad Budarra al-Gharbi .

Education and teachers

During his youth in Tangier, he studied Arabic grammar, theology, and legal texts under al-Arabi Budarra, and read Khalil's al-Mukhtasar with Ahmad ibn Abd al-Salam al-Ayyadi al-Sumayhi . Under his father at the Grand Mosque of Tangier, he studied the Alfiyya of Ibn Malik, al-Mukhtasar, and Sahih al-Bukhari, and also received hadith instruction from Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Kattani .

In 1339 AH, he journeyed to Cairo to further his education at al-Azhar . In Egypt, he studied grammar, logic, and Shafi'i jurisprudence with Muhammad Imam ibn Ibrahim al-Saqqa, Shafi'i legal texts and hadith with Muhammad ibn Salim al-Sharqawi, and Maliki fiqh and hadith with Ahmad Nasr al-Adawi . He also attended the circles of Muhammad Bakhit al-Muti'i at the Abbasid Riwaq in al-Azhar on Quranic exegesis and legal theory, read hadith collections and chains with Umar ibn Hamdan al-Mahrasi, and studied under Muhammad al-Samalluti and Abd al-Maqsud Abd al-Khaliq .

Scholarly standing and controversies

Al-Ghumari was recognized by contemporaries for his vast memory and command of hadith texts and chains of transmission . The scholar Taqi al-Din al-Hilali noted that throughout his travels across Egypt, the Levant, Iraq, the Hijaz, India, and Morocco, he had not encountered anyone comparable to him in memorization, recall, and textual deduction, except for a single scholar in India . He authored specialized verification works, such as al-Hidaya fi Takhrij Ahadith al-Bidaya ("The Guidance in Verifying the Hadiths of al-Bidaya"), which referenced and evaluated the traditions in Ibn Rushd's legal compendium .

Though initially trained in Maliki and Shafi'i jurisprudence, he held strong inclinations toward Zahiri legal thought and opposed unquestioning legal conformity (taqlid) . He was affiliated with the Siddiqiyya Sufi order established by his father . His outspoken positions in transmitter criticism (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil), his polemical language against certain theological groups and prominent early figures, and his disputes with contemporary political and religious leaders generated widespread controversy and opposition . His student Muhammad al-Amin Bukhabza noted his astonishing speed in writing, but criticized him for hastiness and overstatement in some of his critical assessments and hadith judgements .

Later life and death

Al-Ghumari faced persecution in his home city of Tangier and estrangement from the authorities in Morocco, which resulted in a sentence of exile . Consequently, he spent his remaining years residing in Egypt .

He died in Cairo on Sunday, 1 Jumada al-Thaniyah 1380 AH (November 1960 CE), far from his native Tangier .
