al-Futuhat al-Rabbaniyya bi Sharh al-Durra al-Mudiyya fi Ilm al-Qawaid al-Fardiyya (The Divine Openings in Explaining the Radiant Pearl on the Science of Inheritance Rules) is a contemporary commentary on Islamic inheritance law (‘ilm al-farā’iḍ) authored jointly by Dr. Abd al-Aziz ibn Adnan al-Aydan and Dr. Anas ibn Adil al-Yatama . The work provides an exposition of al-Durra al-Mudiyya fi Ilm al-Qawaid al-Fardiyya, a 119-verse didactic poem composed by the Hanbali scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Allah al-Ba'li (d. 1192 AH) .

Background and Purpose

The base text, al-Durra al-Mudiyya, is an abridged versification of al-Rahabi’s (d. 579 AH) renowned poem al-Rahabiyya (also known as Bughyat al-Bahith) . In composing it, al-Ba'li recast the material into 119 verses, trimmed redundant wording, and adjusted the rulings to conform to the Hanbali madhhab wherever it diverged from Shafi'i doctrine, except in the chapters on drowned persons (al-gharqā) and hermaphrodites (al-khunthā) .

Prior to this work, the only available commentary on the poem was al-Ba'li's own self-commentary, al-Fawa'id al-Mardiyya li-Sharh al-Durra al-Mudiyya, which al-Aydan and al-Yatama had critically edited and published in 1439 AH . The authors composed al-Futuhat al-Rabbaniyya to offer a pedagogical commentary that clarifies the poem's expressions and simplifies its legal content for modern students .

Methodology and Sources

The authors explain each verse of the poem according to authoritative Hanbali jurisprudence while highlighting alternative views when held by major verifying scholars . The commentary places particular emphasis on providing practical illustrative examples, simplifying complex inheritance calculations, and supplying textual evidence (tadlil) and legal reasoning (ta'lil) for the discussed rulings .

In preparing the commentary, the authors drew heavily from classical authoritative Hanbali reference works, including:

  • Mansur al-Buhuti’s Kashshaf al-Qina‘ and Sharh Muntaha al-Iradat .
  • Modern treatises on inheritance law, such as Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz’s al-Fawa'id al-Jaliyya fi al-Mabahith al-Fardiyya, Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin’s Tashil al-Fara'id, Salih al-Fawzan’s al-Tahqiqat al-Mardiyya fi al-Mabahith al-Fardiyya, and Abd al-Karim al-Lahim’s al-Fara'id .
