al-Fawa’id al-Dhahabiyya min Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’ (Vol. 2) is the second installment in a series of anthologies compiled by Abu Abd al-Rahman Fahd bin Abd al-Rahman al-Uthman, extracting scholarly, historical, and moral benefits from Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi’s biographical compendium Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’.
Content and Methodology
The work is organized as thematic excerpts taken directly from individual biographical entries in Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’. In the preface to the second volume, the compiler details his editorial conventions:
- Source Citations: Citations to the original printed edition of Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’ are provided in parentheses as
(volume / page), which may encompass multiple excerpts from the same biographical entry. - Authorial Comments: Passages prefaced by phrases such as "I said" (qultu) or "we said" (qulna) represent the original comments and critical evaluations of al-Dhahabi.
- Editor Remarks: Observations derived from the modern editor of Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’ are explicitly attributed with the formula "the editor said" (qala al-muhaqqiq).
- Compiler Insertions: Clarifications and necessary textual additions supplied by al-Uthman to preserve context or readability are enclosed within square brackets.
Al-Uthman noted that the methodology of the second volume incorporated reader feedback on the first collection, which had lacked hadith sourcing (takhrij), exact volume and page citations to the parent work, and an introductory biography of al-Dhahabi—shortcomings he pledged to remedy in future printings of the initial volume.
Publication
The volume was published by Dar al-Sharif. In his closing remarks, the compiler announced that a third and final collection of al-Fawa’id al-Dhahabiyya was scheduled to follow.
