Abu Abd al-Rahman Fahd bin Abd al-Rahman al-Uthman is an Islamic compiler and researcher best known for al-Fawa'id al-Dhahabiyya min Siyar A'lam al-Nubala', a multi-volume thematic anthology of scholarly, historical, and moral benefits extracted from al-Dhahabi's biographical compendium Siyar A'lam al-Nubala' .
Scholarly Work and Method
In his compilation of al-Fawa'id al-Dhahabiyya min Siyar A'lam al-Nubala', published by Dar al-Sharif, al-Uthman selected notable excerpts and scholarly insights arranged under thematic headings . In the introduction to the second volume of the series, he outlined his editorial methodology:
- Referencing each selected entry to its corresponding volume and page in the original edition of Siyar A'lam al-Nubala', noting where multiple benefits derive from a single biographical notice .
- Preserving the voice of al-Dhahabi by designating his observations with "I said" (qultu) or "we said" (qulna) .
- Distinguishing modern editorial commentary by attributing it explicitly to the editor (al-muhaqqiq) .
- Enclosing editorial textual additions within brackets whenever needed to ensure syntactic clarity .
Responding to reader feedback on the first installment regarding the absence of source references, hadith documentation (takhrij), and a biography of al-Dhahabi, al-Uthman pledged to incorporate these elements into future printings of that volume . He also prepared a third and final collection to complete the compilation .
