al-Diya al-Lami min al-Khutab al-Jawami (The Radiant Illumination from Comprehensive Sermons) is a two-part collection of Friday, Eid, and rain-prayer (istisqa) sermons composed by the Saudi scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE) .

Background and Purpose

Ibn Uthaymin assumed the post of Friday and Eid preacher at the Grand Mosque in Unaizah following the death of his teacher, Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Sadi, in Jumada al-Thaniyah 1376 AH . Seeking to follow al-Sadi’s clear and accessible preaching style and to build upon his teacher’s efforts in public guidance, Ibn Uthaymin compiled suitable sermons that he delivered over the course of his duties . The work was conceived as a practical resource addressing foundational tenets of faith, legal rulings, prophetic biography (sirah), social ethics, and seasonal reminders .

Structure and Contents

The work was initially arranged into ten thematic parts (aqsam) comprising more than 125 sermons, alongside specific addresses for the two Eids and prayers for rain :

  1. Knowledge (al-Ilm): Comprising a single section on the virtue of learning and acting upon religious knowledge .
  2. Foundations of Religion (Usul al-Din): Divided into nine subsections covering the names of God, the signs of God, the mission and virtues of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the prophetic military expeditions (ghazawat), the portents of the Hour, the events of the Resurrection and descriptions of Paradise and Hell, belief in divine decree (qadar), the merits of Islam, and Islamic manners .
  3. Acts of Worship (al-Ibadat): Divided into six subsections addressing ritual purification, prayer, zakat, fasting and Eid al-Fitr, the pilgrimage (hajj), sacrifice (udhiyah), and Eid al-Adha, as well as jihad .
  4. Transactions (al-Muamalat): Encompassing three subsections on sincere counsel and trustworthiness, trade and earning wealth, and endowments (waqf) and bequests .
  5. Marriage (al-Nikah): Comprising two subsections on the conditions of marriage and the bridal dowry (sadaq) .
  6. Child Rearing (Tarbiyat al-Awlad): A single section on parental and educational responsibilities .

  9. General Topics: Sermons addressing broader social and religious concerns .
  10. Occasional Sermons: Specific discourses tailored for particular Islamic months and the conclusion of the year .

Publication History and Supplement

The first part of the collection was first printed in 1392 AH . After copies of this initial edition were exhausted, the General Presidency of Scholarly Research, Ifta, Da'wah, and Guidance arranged for a reprint . To broaden the utility of the collection, Ibn Uthaymin prepared a second volume containing a supplement of 118 newly delivered sermons . This supplementary section incorporated sermons on additional subjects, including issuance of legal verdicts (ifta), Quranic exegesis (tafsir), clothing, judicial office and giving testimony, civil strife (fitan), and the religious significance of specific days .
