al-Dhikr al-Thamin (al-Dhikr al-Thamin bi-Qalam al-Shaykh Ibn Uthaymin: Jumlatun Mukhtaratun min Adhkar al-Sabah wa-l-Masa', "The Precious Remembrance") is a concise compilation of selected morning and evening supplications and Quranic verses by the Saudi scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE) .

Composition and Publication

The treatise was originally handwritten by Ibn Uthaymin in 1418 AH, penned concisely—unlike his typical detailed and expansive writings—as though composed quickly in response to a student's request . Following the author's death, the manuscript was provided by Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Rayyis, the muezzin of the Grand Mosque in Unayzah, and prepared for publication as one of the first posthumous releases of Ibn Uthaymin's works .

The publication was authorized by Abd Allah al-Salih al-Uthaymin, head of the scientific committee overseeing the dissemination of Ibn Uthaymin's works, and was reviewed by scholars including Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad al-Sadhan, Abd al-Razzaq al-Badr, and Fahd ibn Nasir al-Sulayman . An abridged pocket edition was also prepared alongside the published text .

Contents and Structure

The book contains twenty-three numbered items of remembrance intended for recitation at morning and evening :

  • Quranic passages: The opening five verses of Surat al-Baqarah, Ayat al-Kursi (2:255), the closing verses of Surat al-Baqarah (2:285–286), the beginning of Surat Ghafir (40:1–3), the concluding verses of Surat al-Hashr (59:22–24), Surat al-Ikhlas, and the two surahs of refuge (Surat al-Falaq and Surat al-Nas) .
  • Supplications and formulas: Traditional invocations seeking protection, well-being, pardon, and refuge from anxiety, laziness, and debt, alongside repetitions of tasbih, tahlil, and istighfar .

The published edition includes a photographic reproduction of Ibn Uthaymin's original manuscript, along with editorial documentation citing hadith sources and detailing the virtues and benefits of each supplication .
