al-Dalaʾil wa-l-Isharāt ʿalā Akhṣar al-Mukhtaṣarāt (Proofs and Indications upon "The Briefest of Abridgments") is a contemporary commentary on Hanbali jurisprudence written jointly by Abd al-Aziz ibn Adnan al-Aydan and Anas ibn Adil al-Yatama . It serves as an elucidation and evidence-based commentary on Ibn Balban's (d. 1083 AH) concise Hanbali legal primer, Akhsar al-Mukhtasarat .

Background and Composition

The commentary was composed on Akhsar al-Mukhtasarat, which was originally abridged by Muhammad ibn Badr al-Din ibn Balban al-Khazraji al-Hanbali from his own work Kafi al-Mubtadi . Noting the widespread modern study of Ibn Balban's text among students and instructors of the Hanbali school due to its concise phrasing and reliance on the late school's authoritative positions, the authors wrote the commentary to provide supporting proofs and clear structural breakdowns for beginners .

For the base text of Akhsar al-Mukhtasarat, the authors relied on four manuscript copies transcribed in Ibn Balban's own handwriting, omitting scribal variants from the commentary itself while editing and publishing the matn independently . The authors completed the composition of the commentary on the night of Sunday, 29 Shawwal 1438 AH .

Methodology and Terminology

The work provides a medium-length commentary balanced between brevity and elaboration . Its approach includes:

  • Explaining the expressions of the base text, specifying its general statements, and clarifying its explicit and implied legal meanings .
  • Organizing legal rulings through classifications (taqsīm), legal proofs (tadlīl), underlying rationales (taʿlīl), and governing principles (ḍawābiṭ) .
  • Adhering primarily to the relied-upon position (al-muʿtamad) of late Hanbali scholars, while occasionally pointing out strong alternate positions and noting the verifying scholars who held them .

The authors established specific conventions in their terminology:

  • The term ittifāqan ("by agreement") denotes the consensus of the four Sunni schools of jurisprudence .
  • The term qīla ("it was said") indicates an internal variant opinion within the Hanbali school .
  • Broader inter-school disagreement (al-khilāf al-ʿālī) is mentioned only selectively for specific reasons .

Publication

The work was published in three volumes by Dar Raka'iz li-l-Nashr wa-l-Tawzi' in its first edition in 1439 AH / 2018 CE . The first volume covers the text from the beginning through the end of the Book of Fasting (Kitāb al-Ṣiyām) .
