al-Awāṣim wa al-Qawāṣim fī al-Dhabb ʿan Sunnat Abī al-Qāsim (The Protections and Shattering Blows in Defense of the Sunnah of Abu al-Qasim) is an extensive theological and hadith-critical treatise by the Yemeni scholar Ibn al-Wazir (775–840 AH / 1373–1436 CE), dedicated to defending the authority of Prophetic hadith, traditional creed, and the reliability of the narrators against theological objections .
Background and Context of Composition
The impetus for writing the work was an epistle addressed to Ibn al-Wazir by his teacher, Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Abi al-Qasim (d. 837 AH) . In this epistle, Ibn Abi al-Qasim criticized Ibn al-Wazir’s orientation toward the Sunnah and attacked foundational Sunni hadith methodologies, challenging the validity of deriving creed and rulings directly from scriptural texts rather than rationalist theological frameworks . In response, Ibn al-Wazir composed al-Awāṣim wa al-Qawāṣim as a detailed point-by-point rebuttal to defend the authority of the Prophet’s ﷺ traditions, the integrity of his Companions, and the principles of the classical scholars of hadith .
Content and Method
The work opens with an introduction addressing the divine wisdom in establishing proofs, balancing gentleness and firmness in polemics, and outlining the virtues of the Prophet ﷺ, the Prophet's household, the Companions, and the wider Muslim community . Ibn al-Wazir argues against declaring Muslims who engage in interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) to be disbelievers (takfīr), encourages unity and reconciliation among Muslims, and outlines methods for dispelling doubts and contentious theological disputation through reliance on the Quran .
Throughout the treatise, Ibn al-Wazir combines scriptural evidence with rational argumentation to refute specific theological charges leveled against the traditionists (Ahl al-Ḥadīth) . He defends the probity (ʿadālah) of the Companions and the criteria of narrator evaluation (al-jarḥ wa-al-taʿdīl), and he refutes accusations that the hadith scholars permitted major sins for prophets or held doctrines of fatalism and anthropomorphism . The book also contains extensive treatises on the actions of servants (afʿāl al-ʿibād), divine attributes, and the rules of independent legal reasoning (ijtihād) and imitation (taqlīd) .
Abridgment
Due to the vastness of the book and the intricate details of its technical debates, Ibn al-Wazir subsequently produced a streamlined summary titled al-Rawd al-Basim fi al-Dhabb an Sunnat Abi al-Qasim, condensing the core arguments while adding select discussions .
Reception and Editions
The work was widely celebrated among later Yemeni scholars and traditionalists. Muhammad ibn Ali al-Shawkani praised it in al-Badr al-Ṭāliʿ, remarking that it contains rare benefits across various branches of knowledge not found in other books, and that had it circulated outside Yemen, it would have been considered among the crowning glories of the country and its scholars . It was also cited extensively by later scholars, including Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-San'ani in his hadith commentary works .
The full text was edited and annotated by Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut and published in nine volumes by Muʾassasat al-Risālah in Beirut .
