Ibn al-Wazir (775–840 AH / 1373–1436 CE) was a Yemeni scholar, traditionist, and independent jurist (mujtahid mutlaq) known for his theological and hadith works, including al-Awasim wa al-Qawasim fi al-Dhabb an Sunnat Abi al-Qasim and Ithar al-Haqq 'ala al-Khalq fi Radd al-Khilafat.

Lineage and Early Life

He was Abu 'Abd Allah, 'Izz al-Din, Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn 'Ali ibn al-Murtada ibn al-Mufaddal ibn Mansur ibn Muhammad al-'Afif ibn al-Mufaddal, tracing his descent to al-Hasan ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Talib. He was born in Rajab 775 AH in Hijrat al-Zahrawayn in the region of Shatab in Yemen, though al-Sakhawi suggested an earlier approximate birth date of around 765 AH.

Education and Scholarly Development

Ibn al-Wazir pursued his studies across several centers of learning, including Sanaa, Sa'da, and Mecca. He studied Arabic under his brother al-Hadi ibn Ibrahim and al-Qadi Muhammad ibn Hamza ibn Muzaffar. In theology (kalam), he studied texts such as Sharh al-Usul, al-Khulasa, al-Ghiyasa, and Tadhkirat Ibn Mattawayh under al-Qadi 'Ali ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Khayr. He received instruction in legal theory (usul al-fiqh) and Quranic exegesis (tafsir) from 'Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Abi al-Qasim, and studied legal applications (furu') under al-Qadi 'Abd Allah ibn al-Hasan al-Dawwari alongside other scholars of Sa'da. His teachers also included al-Nasir ibn Ahmad ibn al-Mutahhar. In Mecca, he studied hadith under Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Zuhayra, and elsewhere under Nafis al-Din al-'Alawi and others.

Among his students was his grand-nephew, the genealogist and poet Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn al-Hadi ibn Ibrahim.

Political and Intellectual Controversies

Following the death of the Zaydi Imam al-Nasir Salah al-Din Muhammad ibn 'Ali in Dhu al-Qi'da 793 AH, competing claims for the imamate arose between his son al-Mansur 'Ali ibn Salah and al-Mahdi Ahmad ibn Yahya al-Murtada. Ibn al-Wazir, along with his brother al-Hadi ibn Ibrahim and other scholars of Sa'da, aligned with al-Mansur 'Ali, a move that weakened al-Mahdi, who was defeated and imprisoned in Sanaa. After al-Mahdi later escaped to Thula, Ibn al-Wazir traveled to meet him, engaging in extensive discussions and presenting twenty-five unresolved questions regarding the doctrine of the imamate.

Although raised within the Zaydi tradition, Ibn al-Wazir eventually abandoned strict sectarian adherence (taqlid) to adopt independent derivation directly from scriptural texts and prophetic traditions. When his former teacher 'Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Abi al-Qasim sent him an epistle censuring this departure, Ibn al-Wazir authored his extensive treatise al-Awasim wa al-Qawasim fi al-Dhabb an Sunnat Abi al-Qasim—later abridged as al-Rawd al-Basim fi al-Dhabb an Sunnat Abi al-Qasim—to defend the canonical hadith corpus, its narrators, and scriptural methodology.

Standing and Later Life

Ibn al-Wazir was celebrated by subsequent scholars for combining rational sciences with an exhaustive command of hadith literature and biographical evaluation (rijal). His contemporary Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Azraqi remarked that no one in their era reached Ibn al-Wazir's degree of ijtihad due to his unparalleled proficiency in hadith and transmitted knowledge. Muhammad ibn 'Ali al-Shawkani praised him as an absolute mujtahid whose stature was acknowledged across various schools of thought, observing that Yemen had not produced his equal.

In his later years, Ibn al-Wazir withdrew from public life, turning away from society to devote himself entirely to worship and solitary contemplation in open lands.

Death

Ibn al-Wazir died in Sanaa on Tuesday, 24 Muharram 840 AH. He was buried at the open prayer ground (al-jabbana) near the mosque of Farwa.
