Kitab al-Awail (The Book of Primacies) is a thematic hadith monograph by the traditionist Abu al-Qasim al-Tabarani (260–360 AH / 873–971 CE), devoted to documenting traditions concerning the earliest occurrences of religious, historical, and ritual events .
Subject and Content
The work belongs to the traditional Islamic genre of awāʾil (primacies or firsts), a branch of historical and hadith literature that catalogues initial occurrences in human history and Islamic practice . Al-Tabarani compiles narrated traditions with their respective chains of transmission (asānīd) to establish historical and religious antecedents .
Among the topics documented in the work are:
- The earliest figures to embrace Islam, such as traditions identifying Khadijah and Ali .
- The first establishment of the Friday communal prayer (Jumuʿah) in Medina prior to the Prophet's arrival, led by Musʿab ibn ʿUmayr .
- Ancient historical primacies, including traditions regarding Abraham being the first to undergo circumcision .
- Eschatological primacies, such as the first bodily limbs to speak and testify on the Day of Resurrection, or the first divine words addressed to the believers .
Transmission and Reception
Kitab al-Awail is recorded among al-Tabarani's known works in biographical and bibliographical dictionaries, including those by al-Dhahabi and Hajji Khalifa . Ahmad al-Batirqani recorded entering al-Tabarani's house alongside the traditionist Ibn Mardawayh after the death of al-Tabarani's son Abu Dharr to sell his books, where Ibn Mardawayh observed fascicles (ajzāʾ) of al-Awail .
Editions
The work was edited by Muhammad Shakkur ibn Mahmud al-Hajji and published in Beirut by Mu'assasat al-Risala (1st edition, 1403 AH / 1983 CE) .
