Ahadith al-Manadili (Min Ahadith Abi al-Qasim al-Manadili) is a short hadith tract (juz') preserving narrations transmitted by the Basran Quran reciter and legal assessor (mu'addal) Abu al-Qasim al-Manadili (d. after 466 AH / 1073 CE) .
Transmission and Context
Abu al-Qasim Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Manadili transmitted these narrations in Basra in 466 AH . They were received from him by Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abi Nasr al-Ushnani, who subsequently recited them to the hadith master Abu Tahir al-Silafi at his home on Monday, 2 Dhu al-Qi'dah 490 AH . Auditions (sama') were later held before al-Silafi in Shawwal 574 AH .
As noted by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in al-Mu'jam al-Mufahras and al-Majma' al-Mu'assas, this tract formed the third part of a seven-part compilation of al-Silafi's transmissions known as al-Safinah al-Jara'idiyyah al-Kubra (The Major Jara'idi Anthology), transmitted through al-Silafi's grandson Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman ibn Makki to Muhammad ibn Ya'qub al-Jara'idi .
Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi noted that two distinct hadith parts survived from al-Manadili's transmission: this compilation transmitted via al-Ushnani, and another part (Juz' al-Manadili) transmitted via Abu Ja'far al-Ghitrif ibn Abd Allah al-Sa'idani, which includes a lengthy narrative on the virtues of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs .
Contents
The collection contains prophetic traditions transmitted by al-Manadili from several of his teachers:
- From Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ya'qub al-Tabithi (dictated in 397 AH): the narration of Abu Hurayrah stating, الحج المبرور ليس له جزاء إلا الجنة، والعمرتان تكفران ما بينهما ("An accepted Hajj has no reward other than Paradise, and two Umrahs expiate what is between them") .
- From Abu al-Husayn Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Jallab: a report on Abu Bakr al-Siddiq wearing a pinned cloak, and a report from Jabir ibn Samurah concerning the Prophet's practice of remaining in his place of prayer until sunrise and observing extended silence .
- From the judge Abu al-Husayn Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Ghassan: a narration on the comfort of believers in their graves, and a transmission from Ali ibn Abi Talib mentioning tenfold blessings associated with the recitation of Surah Ya-Sin .
Manuscripts and Publication
A manuscript of the tract is preserved in the Zahiriyyah Library in Damascus within Majmu' 1148 (folios 104–106), penned by a single scribe among other small parts transmitted by al-Silafi . The text was edited by Nabil Sa'd al-Din Jarrar and published in a collective volume of hadith tracts titled Majmu' fihi Musannafat Tirad al-Zaynabi wa-Ajza' Hadithiyyah Ukhra (2019) .
