Abu al-Qasim al-Manadili (d. after 466 AH / 1074 CE) was a Basran Quran reciter, judicial witness (mu'addal), and hadith transmitter known through preserved hadith notebooks .
Life and Background
His full name was Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad, with the honorific epithets of reciter (al-muqri') and notary witness (al-mu'addal) . The occupational surname al-Manadili relates to the weaving or sale of cloths and kerchiefs (manadil) . He was active in Basra, where he studied and transmitted hadith over an exceptionally long life span; his earliest documented audition occurred in 397 AH (1006–1007 CE) when he heard dictations from Ahmad ibn Ya'qub al-Mu'addal al-Tabithi .
He was still delivering transmissions in Basra during 466 AH (1073–1074 CE) . The historian al-Dhahabi recorded his biographical entry among the obituaries of the decade 461–470 AH, placing his death around 470 AH (c. 1077–1078 CE) .
Hadith Transmission and Legacy
Al-Manadili studied under leading Basran traditionists, including Abu Umar al-Hashimi, the hadith master Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Ghassan, and Ahmad ibn Ya'qub al-Mu'addal .
He passed his narrations to several disciples, among them Abu Ja'far al-Ghitrif ibn Abd Allah al-Sa'idani, Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abi Nasr al-Ushnani, and Abu Sa'id al-Riyahi . Al-Dhahabi noted the survival of two distinct hadith notebooks (juz'an) from his transmissions :
- Juz' al-Manadili ("The Notebook of al-Manadili"), preserved via al-Ghitrif, which concludes with an extended narration on the virtues of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs . Biographical critics, including al-Dhahabi and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, noted that this concluding tradition on the Caliphs was fabricated (mawdu'), as its chain contained two unknown transmitters: Muhammad ibn Ibrahim and Ahmad ibn Zufar .
- Ahadith al-Manadili ("Traditions of al-Manadili"), transmitted through al-Ushnani to the hadith scholar Abu Tahir al-Silafi, which formed the third part of the compilation known as al-Safinah al-Jara'idiyyah al-Kubra .
