Adab al-Hiwar min Khilal Sirat Musab ibn Umayr (The Etiquette of Dialogue through the Biography of Mus'ab ibn Umayr) is an Islamic pedagogical treatise by Adnan al-Jabiri that examines the principles and ethics of constructive dialogue through the life and missionary interactions of the companion Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr.
Origin and Context
The treatise is an abridgment extracted from the author's master's thesis submitted to the Department of Education in the College of Da'wah and Usul al-Din at the Islamic University of Madinah during the 1433–1434 AH academic year, titled Uslub al-Hiwar min Khilal Sirat Musab ibn Umayr wa-Tatbiqatuh al-Tarbawiyyah (The Method of Dialogue through the Biography of Mus'ab ibn Umayr and Its Educational Applications). The work was published in Medina in 1434 AH (2013 CE), alongside the author's biographical monograph on the companion. The text was reviewed and vetted by Dr. Abd al-Haqq ibn Hammadi al-Hawwas, associate professor of Arabic at the Higher Institute for Imams and Preachers at Taibah University.
Contents and Structure
The book begins with an introductory overview defining dialogue (al-hiwar) and etiquette (al-adab) in linguistic and terminological usage, emphasizing dialogue as an essential method in Islamic education derived from the Quran and the Prophetic Sunnah. The text is structured into four main thematic chapters:
- Chapter One: Psychological Etiquette of Dialogue (Adab al-Hiwar al-Nafsiyyah): Analyzes the internal dispositions and psychological conditions that foster productive engagement, including sincerity of intention, establishing a calm and suitable environment, justice and impartiality, forbearance and patience, steadfast dignity upon the truth, active listening, and exhibiting principled anger solely for the defense of truth.
- Chapter Two: Intellectual and Scholarly Etiquette of Dialogue (Adab al-Hiwar al-Ilmiyyah): Discusses methodological requirements, focusing on possessing religious knowledge, understanding the topic of discussion and the background of the interlocutor, gradualism by prioritizing core matters first, relying upon sound textual proofs, clarity and conciseness of speech, and addressing doubts with tailored responses.
- Chapter Three: Verbal Etiquette of Dialogue (Adab al-Hiwar al-Lafdhiyyah): Outlines linguistic conduct during discussions, including choosing kind words and appropriate expressions, gentle reprimand (husn al-itab), utilizing admonition and reminders, observing polite manners in questioning, knowing when to verbally disengage from obstinate interlocutors, and avoiding overgeneralization when addressing misconduct.
- Chapter Four: Educational Outcomes of Dialogue (al-Athar al-Tarbawiyyah lil-Hiwar): Details the positive results achieved through principled dialogue, exemplified by the spread of knowledge across Medina, distinguishing truth from falsehood, curbing the aggression of opponents, unifying community ranks, and attaining spiritual reward from God.
