Abu Zura al-Razi wa Juhuduhu fi al-Sunna al-Nabawiyya (Abu Zura al-Razi and His Contributions to the Prophetic Sunnah) is an academic study and critical edition by Sadi bin Mahdi al-Hashimi examining the life, hadith scholarship, and critical methodology of the third-century AH hadith master Abu Zura al-Razi (d. 264 AH) .
Background and Purpose
The work was originally prepared as a doctoral dissertation in hadith and its sciences supervised by al-Husayni Abd al-Majid Hashim . The author undertook the study because of Abu Zura's standing among hadith masters in transmitter criticism (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil) and hidden defects ('ilal), as well as the prominence of his treatise on weak narrators (al-Du'afa'), which had contributed substantially to biographical evaluation but had not previously been published in a comprehensive study alongside his responses to Abu Uthman al-Bardha'i .
Structure and Content
The book is organized into an introduction, three main parts, and a conclusion :
- Part One: An extensive biographical and methodological study of Abu Zura al-Razi across nine chapters. It covers the scholarly centers of Khurasan and the city of Rayy, the generations of hadith scholars and theological schools there, Abu Zura's lineage, kunya, and birth year (evaluating four reported dates and favoring 194 AH), his education and travels, his teachers, and his students . It also examines his knowledge of Quranic recitation (qira'at), hadith terminology, and authorship of works such as al-Tafsir and A'lam al-Nubuwwa, his memorization capacity and reception, his legal school and theological creed—drawing primarily on al-Lalaka'i's Sharh Usul I'tiqad Ahl al-Sunna—his asceticism and death, and his method in identifying hidden defects ('ilal) based on Ibn Abi Hatim's 'Ilal al-Hadith .
- Part Two: Contains a twelve-part preparatory study followed by the critical edition of Abu Zura's Asami al-Du'afa' wa-man Tukullima fihim min al-Muhaddithin (known as Kitab al-Du'afa') along with his answers to the questions posed by al-Bardha'i (Ajwibatuhu 'ala As'ilat al-Bardha'i) .
- Part Three: A four-chapter reference compendium on Abu Zura's assessments of narrators. The first chapter lists criticized narrators not recorded in the edited texts, serving as a supplement; the second compiles narrators authenticated (ta'dil) by Abu Zura; the third addresses narrators whom he criticized at one time and authenticated at another, explaining the reasons; and the fourth examines prominent scholars criticized by Abu Zura, offering a defense and reconciliation of differing evaluations .
The conclusion summarizes findings on the role of Rayy during the third century AH and Abu Zura's adherence to the Quran and Sunnah in his asceticism and scholarly output .
Publication
The work was first published in 1402 AH / 1982 CE by the Academic Council of the Islamic University of Madinah as the third title in its Islamic Heritage Revival Series, featuring a foreword by the university's vice president, Abdullah ibn Abdullah al-Zayid . A second edition was published in Egypt by Dar al-Wafa' in 1409 AH .
