Life and Career
Yusuf al-Badii was born and raised in Damascus . In biographical sources where his father's given name was unspecified, he was alternatively recorded as Yusuf ibn Abd Allah . He subsequently relocated to Aleppo, where he established his residence and achieved literary prominence . He served in the judiciary as the judge (qadi) of Mosul . Later traveling to the Ottoman heartland of Anatolia (bilad al-rum), he died there in 1073 AH (1662 CE) .
Literary Style and Reception
Al-Badii was recognized as a prose stylist, poet, and critic of classical Arabic poetry . In his critical monograph on the Abbasid poet Abu Tammam, titled Hibat al-ayyam fima yata'allaq bi-Abi Tammam ("The Gift of Days Concerning Abu Tammam"), he followed the discursive method of classical literary scholars by interweaving biographical notices, witty anecdotes, historical digressions on the patrons praised by poets, and comparative literary analyses . Modern scholars highlighted his eloquence, critical evaluation (muwazanah), and adherence to classical standards during an eleventh-century AH period when literary taste had largely declined . In a similar vein, his study on al-Mutanabbi compiled biographical reports and selected verse to elucidate the poet's life and literary rank .
