Mustafa Hilmi is an Egyptian scholar and professor of Islamic philosophy and creed at the Faculty of Dar al-Ulum, Cairo University, known for his studies on traditionalist Sunni theology and methodology.

Academic Career and Scholarship

Hilmi served as a professor of Islamic philosophy in the Faculty of Dar al-Ulum at Cairo University, where he supervised postgraduate research in Islamic thought and theology. His academic work centered on articulating the foundations of traditionalist Sunni belief and examining the methods of classical and modern thought.

In his treatise Manhaj Ulama al-Hadith wa al-Sunna fi Usul al-Din (The Methodology of the Scholars of Hadith and Sunna in the Foundations of Religion), published in 1402 AH / 1982 CE, he examined the theological and rational approaches of traditionist scholars (Ahl al-Hadith), arguing that their discourse employed sound logical arguments grounded in scriptural texts rather than speculative dialectical theology (kalam). He further analyzed traditionalist methodology in Qawa'id al-Manhaj al-Salafi (Principles of the Salafi Method) and explored doctrinal comparisons in Al-Salafiyya bayn al-Aqida al-Islamiyya wa al-Falsafa al-Gharbiyya (Salafism Between Islamic Creed and Western Philosophy).

Reception

In contemporary theological discussions, Hilmi has been cited as a defender of traditionalist Sunni creed within academic philosophy departments. His writings also drew attention and discussion among Salafi scholars regarding his adoption of Ibn Taymiyya's distinction between Sunni and innovative forms of Sufism.
