Mustafa Dib al-Bugha is a contemporary Syrian Shafi'i jurist and hadith scholar who served as a professor of hadith and its sciences at Damascus University.

Education and academic career

Mustafa Dib al-Bugha, who carries the kunya Abu al-Hasan, pursued advanced Islamic legal studies in Egypt. He obtained his doctorate from the Faculty of Sharia at al-Azhar University in Cairo with a dissertation examining legal theory and comparative jurisprudence, titled Athar al-Adilla al-Mukhtalaf fiha fi al-Fiqh al-Islami ("The Impact of Disputed Evidences in Islamic Jurisprudence"). He subsequently joined the academic faculty at Damascus University, where he taught hadith and its disciplines in the Faculty of Sharia.

Scholarly contribution

Al-Bugha contributed extensively to the modern pedagogical presentation of Shafi'i jurisprudence and scriptural verification. Together with Mustafa al-Khin and 'Ali al-Sharbaji, he co-authored the multi-volume manual al-Fiqh al-Manhaji 'ala Madhhab al-Imam al-Shafi'i ("Methodological Jurisprudence According to the School of Imam al-Shafi'i"), which aimed to present standard Shafi'i rulings in a simplified, accessible style directly paired with their scriptural sources. In a similar vein, he authored al-Tadhhib fi Adillat Matn al-Ghaya wa al-Taqrib, furnishing textual and legal proofs for the classical Shafi'i primer of Abu Shuja'.

In the field of hadith, al-Bugha engaged in textual editing and commentary on foundational works. He prepared a prominent annotated and numbered edition of Sahih al-Bukhari, accompanied by explanatory marginalia and hadith numbering that became widely utilized in contemporary scholarship.
