Academic Career and Research
Ibn Ubayd served as an associate professor in the field of Prophetic Sunnah and its sciences at Umm al-Qura University in Mecca. His scholarly work focused primarily on hadith criticism, textual recensions, and the critical evaluation of chains of transmission.
In his monograph Riwayat wa-Nusakh al-Jami al-Sahih ("Transmissions and Manuscripts of al-Jami al-Sahih"), he investigated the variants and chains of transmission found across the recensions of al-Bukhari's canonical compilation, evaluating the primary narrators and addressing the analytical treatments of textual divergence provided by earlier scholars such as Abu Ali al-Jayyani and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani. In Takhrij al-Ahadith al-Marfuah al-Musnadah fi Kitab al-Tarikh al-Kabir ("Extraction of the Connected Prophetic Traditions in al-Tarikh al-Kabir"), he documented and critically graded 1,127 connected traditions preserved in al-Bukhari's biographical work, resolving textual errors in previous editions by consulting manuscript witnesses such as the Köprülü, Chester Beatty, and Ahmet III codices.
