Muhammad al-Arabi al-Qarawi al-Maliki was a modern Maliki jurist, best known for his didactic legal manual, al-Khulasa al-Fiqhiyya ala Madhhab al-Sada al-Malikiyya ("The Jurisprudential Summary According to the School of the Maliki Masters") .

Scholarly Contribution and Pedagogical Method

Al-Qarawi is also recorded as Muhammad ibn al-Arabi al-Qarawi, and in some bibliographical classifications as al-Qarawi al-Arabi al-Andalusi . His primary scholarly renown rests on al-Khulasa al-Fiqhiyya, which was printed in Rabat .

Al-Qarawi designed his jurisprudential manual using a modern instructional format aimed at facilitating legal education for contemporary students . Following the rapid exhaustion of its first print run within a few months and at the urging of scholars and educators, he revised and reordered the work . His updated pedagogical approach incorporated two main features: casting legal issues into a question-and-answer format to accustom students to legal inquiry and help them build an ingrained legal aptitude (malaka), and concluding each chapter with a succinct summary (khulasa) that consolidated its core rulings in clear prose .

His legal formulations have been cited in later legal discussions, including his ruling that solid intoxicants such as cannabis are ritually pure (tahir) despite the prohibition of ingesting them, and that external medical application on the surface of the body is permissible .
