Khalid al-Durays (Khalid ibn Mansur ibn Abd Allah al-Durays) is a contemporary Saudi scholar and professor of hadith studies based at King Saud University in Riyadh . He is known for his research in hadith methodology, narrator criticism, and the criteria of early hadith authorities .

Education and academic career

Al-Durays pursued his graduate studies in the Department of Islamic Studies (specializing in Quranic exegesis and hadith) at the College of Education at King Saud University, where he prepared his master's thesis under the academic supervision of Shakir Fayyad . He subsequently joined the academic faculty at King Saud University, serving as a professor of hadith and participating in scholarly statements issued by the university's hadith specialists .

Scholarly contributions

Al-Durays's research focuses on classical hadith terminology, the transmission criteria of early master critics, and historical authentication formulas . In his study Mawqif al-Imamayn al-Bukhari wa Muslim min Ishtirat al-Liqya wa al-Sama fi al-Sanad al-Mu'an'an bayn al-Muta'asirin ("The Stance of the Two Imams al-Bukhari and Muslim on Requiring Meeting and Direct Audition in Mu'an'an Chains Between Contemporaries"), he investigated the debate over chain continuity (ittisal), analyzing the nuanced positions of al-Bukhari and Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj and arguing that al-Bukhari accepted contemporaneity when substantiated by strong contextual indicators suggesting a meeting .

In another monograph, al-Idah al-Jali fi Naqd Maqulat: Sahhahahu al-Hakim wa Wafaqahu al-Dhahabi ("Clear Elucidation in Critiquing the Phrase: 'Al-Hakim Authenticated It and Al-Dhahabi Concurred'"), he re-examined al-Dhahabi's annotations on al-Hakim al-Naysaburi's al-Mustadrak, concluding that al-Dhahabi's silence over a narration cannot be construed as an endorsement of al-Hakim's authentication . He also authored al-Hadith al-Hasan li-Dhatihi wa li-Ghayrihi ("The Hadith That Is Fair in Itself and Through Corroboration"), an inductive critical examination of the categorization of sound (hasan) reports in hadith terminology .

List of Works

  • This specialist study in hadith methodology examines the classical debate regarding the conditions required to establish the continuity (ittisal) of a chain of transmission using the non-explicit formula 'an (al-hadith al-mu'an'an) between contemporary narrators. It investigates whether contemporaneity and the possibility of meeting suffice, or if evidence of an actual meeting (liqya) or direct hearing (sama') is necessary, focusing on the divergent positions of al-Bukhari and Muslim.

  • This critical scholarly monograph analyzes and refutes the methodology used by the German Orientalist Joseph Schacht in his studies on the Prophetic Sunna and early Islamic jurisprudence. Evaluating Schacht's research against recognized principles of scientific methodology rather than solely theological disagreements, the book investigates specific methodological violations in his scholarship to demonstrate how these defects compromise the validity of his historical and legal conclusions.
