Ibn al-Sharqi (240–325 AH / 854–937 CE) was a Shafi'i hadith scholar and hafiz from Nishapur, recognized for his expertise in hadith criticism and his compilation al-Sahih.
Background and Travels
His full name was Abu Hamid Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Naysaburi. He was born in Rajab 240 AH (854/855 CE). The nisba "al-Sharqi" was attributed to him because he resided in the eastern quarter of Nishapur. His older brother was the hadith transmitter and physician Abu Muhammad 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan.
Ibn al-Sharqi traveled widely across Islamic scholarly centers to study hadith. He journeyed to Rayy, Baghdad, Kufa, and Mecca. He performed the pilgrimage multiple times, writing down narrations along the route and having students transmit from him while traveling.
Teachers and Students
In his native Nishapur, Ibn al-Sharqi studied under prominent authorities including Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Dhuhli, Abd al-Rahman ibn Bishr ibn al-Hakam, Ahmad ibn al-Azhar, Ahmad ibn Yusuf al-Sulami, Ahmad ibn Hafs ibn 'Abd Allah, and was a direct student of Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj. During his travels, he took hadith from Abu Hatim al-Razi in Rayy, Muhammad ibn Ishaq al-Saghani, al-Abbas ibn Muhammad al-Duri, 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Shakir, and Ahmad ibn Abi Khaythama in Baghdad, Abu Hazim Ahmad ibn Hazim ibn Abi Gharazah in Kufa, and Abu Yahya ibn Abi Masarra in the Hijaz.
A substantial generation of scholars narrated from him, among them Ibn Uqdah, Abu Ahmad al-'Assal, Abu Ali al-Naysaburi, Ibn Adi, Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq al-Sibghi, Zahir ibn Ahmad al-Sarkhasi, al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Makhldi, Abu Bakr al-Jawzaqi, and Abu Ahmad al-Hakim.
Standing and Assessment
Ibn al-Sharqi was regarded as a leading hafiz of Khurasan. Al-Hakim al-Naysaburi described him as peerless in his era in memorization, precision, and critical discernment. Emphasizing his critical acumen in distinguishing sound from forged reports, Ibn Khuzaymah remarked: "The life of Abu Hamid shields people from lying against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Abu Abd Allah al-Bushanji would also consult him on matters of hadith.
Death
Ibn al-Sharqi died before noon on Sunday, 19 Ramadan 325 AH (July 937 CE), and was buried after the late afternoon prayer. His brother Abu Muhammad 'Abd Allah led the funeral prayer. Al-Khalili differed regarding the date, placing his death in 318 AH. In a dream report recorded by Abu Bakr al-Jawzaqi, Abu Ali Muhammad ibn Tahir saw Ibn al-Sharqi after his death and asked what had elevated him, to which he replied that he was elevated and benefited by hadith.
