Ibn Abi Bakr al-Wadani (d. after 933 AH / 1526 CE) was a Maliki jurist from Ouadane in the Chinguetti region of present-day Mauritania, known for authoring Mawhub al-Jalil fi Sharh Mukhtasar Khalil, the earliest surviving commentary on Khalil ibn Ishaq al-Jundi's Mukhtasar Khalil composed in that region .

Lineage and Background

His full name is Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abi Bakr ibn Shams al-Din ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Hajj Uthman ibn Muhammad ibn al-Ban al-Wadani al-Hajji . In other manuscript copies, his ancestral chain appears without Shams al-Din and Muhammad, recorded as Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abi Bakr ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Hajj Uthman ibn Muhammad al-Labani .

His tribal nisba, al-Hajji, associates him with the Idaw al-Hajj community of Ouadane . His family line is traditionally traced to the Ansar through the Banu al-Najjar branch of the Khazraj via Anas ibn Malik, though verses by Muhammad Mbarak al-Lamtoni note an alternative attribution linking his ancestor al-Hajj Uthman to Banu Makhzum .

Scholarly Standing

Al-Wadani was part of the early scholarly network through which Khalil's compendium entered the western Saharan region, where scholars in Ouadane received legal texts from their cousins among the Aqit family of Timbuktu . His commentary, Mawhub al-Jalil fi Sharh Mukhtasar Khalil, constitutes the foundational local commentary on the text, providing detailed legal analysis of Maliki rulings .
