Hasan Ismail Abd al-Raziq (d. 1429 AH / 2008 CE) was an Egyptian scholar of Arabic rhetoric who served as Professor and Head of the Department of Rhetoric at Al-Azhar University in Zagazig.

Academic Career and Scholarly Contribution

Abd al-Raziq pursued an academic career at the Faculty of Arabic Language at Al-Azhar University's Zagazig branch, where he advanced from Assistant Professor to full Professor of Rhetoric and served as Chair of the Department of Rhetoric.

His academic output focused on classical Arabic rhetoric (balagha), compositional syntax (nazm), and literary criticism. In his critical study on the thought of Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani, he challenged the pedagogical framework of later-period rhetoricians, arguing that their dependence on abridgments, commentaries, and scholastic disputes obscured core insights, deadened aesthetic sensibility, and failed to cultivate an authentic appreciation for Arabic stylistic expression. He also examined the rhetorical dimensions of early linguistic sources, highlighting the stylistic principles latent within Ibn Jinni's al-Khasa'is. In addition to specialized monographs, he authored al-Balagha al-Safiya fi al-Ma'ani wa-l-Bayan wa-l-Badi' ("Pure Rhetoric on Semantics, Figures of Speech, and Embellishments") as a systematic presentation of the three traditional disciplines of Arabic rhetoric.
