Sharaf al-Din al-Umriti (d. after 989 AH / 1581 CE) was an Egyptian Shafi'i jurist, legal theorist, grammarian, and didactic poet associated with al-Azhar, celebrated for versifying foundational pedagogical manuals such as Tashil al-Turuqat and al-Durra al-Bahiya .
Background and chronology
His full lineage is Yahya ibn Nur al-Din Musa ibn Ramadan ibn 'Umayra, bearing the honorific title Sharaf al-Din and the kunya Abu al-Khayr . His nisba al-Umriti derives from his birthplace, the village of 'Umrit in the Bilbays district of the Sharqiyya province in Egypt, alongside his affiliations as al-Shafi'i, al-Ansari, and al-Azhari .
Some earlier biographical sources recorded his death around 890 AH (1485 CE) . However, his active scholarly life belongs to the tenth century AH; the epilogue of his versification of al-Juwayni's al-Waraqat establishes through an abjad chronogram that he completed it in 989 AH, and an earlier composition of his was completed in 988 AH, demonstrating that his death occurred after 989 AH .
Scholarly contribution
Al-Umriti gained widespread recognition across the Islamic world for his mastery of didactic poetry (nazm), rendering complex prose textbooks into fluid, accessible verse to facilitate student memorization and instruction . His poetic compositions were distinguished by clarity of expression, structural precision, and the addition of supplementary rulings and explanations that expanded upon the original prose texts . Among his most influential works is Nihayat al-Tadrib fi Nazm Ghayat al-Taqrib, a comprehensive poetic rendition of Abu Shuja' al-Isfahani's standard Shafi'i legal manual . His didactic poems generated extensive scholarly interest and became central texts in traditional curricula, attracting numerous commentaries and generations of memorizers .
