Abd al-Aziz Atiq (d. 1396 AH / 1976 CE) was an Arabic scholar and university professor known for his pedagogical treatises on Arabic rhetoric and literary sciences.
Academic Career and Scholarship
Atiq taught in the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at Beirut Arab University, where he delivered university lectures that formed the basis for several of his instructional works . He maintained that the study of rhetoric was essential not only for specialists in Arabic language and literature, but also as an indispensable foundation for literary critics and creative writers .
In his scholarship, Atiq combined historical surveys of rhetorical theory with systematic analytical frameworks designed to make classical disciplines accessible to modern university students . In Ilm al-Ma'ani (The Science of Meanings), developed for first-year undergraduate students, he explored the theoretical concepts of eloquence and clarity, traced the historical development of the discipline up to Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani, and provided detailed analyses of rhetorical topics accompanied by extensive textual examples . Likewise, in Ilm al-Bayan (The Science of Rhetorical Figures), prepared for second-year students, he surveyed the contributions and methodologies of foundational rhetoricians—including al-Jurjani, al-Zamakhshari, and al-Sakkaki—before analyzing similes, tropes, metaphors, and metonymy .
