Uqud al-Hamz (The Necklaces of Hamzah), also referenced alongside Khawas Amthilat al-Fi'l (The Properties of Verbal Forms) and known in manuscript traditions in connection with al-Alfaz al-Mahmuzah (The Hamzated Words), is a linguistic and grammatical treatise by the Arab grammarian and philologist Ibn Jinni (d. 392 AH / 1002 CE) focusing on hamzated vocabulary and verbal morphology .
Purpose and Content
The work was compiled as a practical philological guide to frequently used hamzated words needed by scribes and writers . Ibn Jinni arranged the vocabulary according to the alphabetical order of the Arabic letters (huruf al-mu'jam) for ease of reference and accuracy, while deliberately omitting obscure and eccentric usages (al-wahshi al-gharib) . Entries detail verbal and nominal hamzated derivations across individual root letters, illustrating standard forms such as bada'tu, bari'tu, and awja'tu .
Transmission and Publication
The treatise is recorded in classical and bio-bibliographical listings among Ibn Jinni's morphological and lexical compositions . It was published under the title Uqud al-Hamz wa-khawas amthilat al-fi'l, edited by Wajih al-Kaylani and published in Egypt in 1343 AH / 1924 CE .
